Is there a form of energy storage currently in development / not commercialized yet that will render the Li-On battery obsolete in compactness and portability?

Yes created by the guy who created lithium batteries

source?
Yes it's called gasoline
Nuclear batteries already have but we have to find a way to make them safe for people first and cheap. That won't be remotely easy.

But they are Lithium Batteries
Just Lithium Batteries 2.0 if you will.
The inventor's last name was "goodenough" if i'm not wrong.
I think OP is looking for another thing other than traditional batteries.
And actually, OP ethanol is a good answer for cars and such. Once we find a way to make an efficient fuel cell for ethanol, it will skyrocket and it is 100% sustainable and green(since the LifeCycle is closed)
Graphene looks promising. I really hope there is a breakthrough in battery technology in the near future.
