Just bought parts for a new comp and trying to figure out what version of windows to use. Is there any good reason to buy into windows 8/10 instead of just sticking with 7?

Microsoft software is malware.

Install GNU/Linux.

I am aware. I'm dual-booting with linux. I just don't want it to become a linux distro war, as I'm actually looking for an answer to my original question.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I dual boot Fedora with Win 8.1. Win 8.1 is pretty good, all the speed of 10 but none of the Botnet.
>>59619735
>any windows
>no botnet
pick one
>>59619746
Ok fair. Less botnet then?
>>59619735
>>59619746
>>59619761
Well alright, but how's 7 for botnet vs. 8 then?
>>59619658
yes
getting win7 updated and patched properly is freaking nighmare these days and if you dont do it it will break very quickly thanks to the risks of the modern internet
win 10 is botnet panopticon nightmare
the /g/ approved answer believe it or not is win 8.1 with classic shell
>up to date
>minimal botnet
>easy usb install
trust me. linux guy here who just had to fix a few friends who just had to have win7 machines and got alot of headaches
>>59619826
I'm actually not that concerned about managing the updates and patching, but I appreciate the answer. Would 7 edge it out if I'm willing to go through the rigamarole?
>>59619814
They're about the same.
>>59619921
Thank you. 8.1 it is then.
>>59619658
Keep in mind MS will not push out updates to you if you have a 6 or 7 series Intel processor, should you go with 7 or 8.1.

>getting win7 updated and patched properly is freaking nighmare these days and if you dont do it it will break very quickly thanks to the risks of the modern internet
ignore this moron
im using an unpatched winxp and there is nothing wrong
MS shills like to spread the myth that their os is useless without security patches, but seriously, if youre not a fucking moron there is nothing to worry about
>>59619938
Interesting, didn't know that. Why not? I've got an i5 6600k and I only see the 6600 and 6600T in the 7th gen list. Does this apply for the k too?
>>59620006
Agreed.
>>59619658
>suggesting that 8 is worth being downloaded
>>59620482
Can you explain? I'm trying to make an informed decision here.

Windows 8 is literally the most infamous windows version, I'm assuming you want windows because of gaming, because linux is too complicated for you or because you already like windows, windows 8 has a completely different layout than 7 and 10 and doesn't have a lot of the elements that 7 does, people got pissed off so windows quickly created windows 10 which is similar to 7, also if you used 7 then 10 will be easier than 10, but if you don't have a reason that you have to have windows then i would install linux which is free
I have tried Winblows 10, 8, 8.1, XP, and 7.
After many years of deliberation the upgrade from XP to 7 was worth it but "upgrading" further isn't worth it at all. 10 is literally spyware and locked down, 8/8.1 has a toddler UI with retarded navigation and features you don't need.
windows 7 "SP2" is the only microshaft OS variant worth using.

It's what every desktop OS should strive to be.
