Mostly his live streams are programming and explanation of templeos, without anything special happening. Occasionally he has an extra special schizoid outburst, often explicitly complaining about "niggers" of various types, such as MIT Niggers, CIA Niggers and the "herd of nigger cattle" controlled by Bill Gates and the Illuminati. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

something is not right with that windows partition. start up windows, disable fast booting, schedule a chkdsk (just run chkdsk /f c: and it will do it for you) and reboot. After the check finished, try resizing it again. Alternatively, get Hiren's boot CD and use a windows-based partition manager program to resize the partition. The might have better NTFS tools that free software.
>>
>>59618854
Icecat is firefox. It's literally just a recompile of firefox with a few extensions out of the box and the fsf is too lazy to recompile it on time to update it often going months till you see an update.

Not him, but it's the opposite. Distros like debian split software into many packages, allowing you to only install the parts of a program you need and libraries without headers. Arch mostly uses a single package for everything. You have fewer packages, but the packages are significantly larger so you end up using more disk space and installing more crap you don't need.

Of course unless you're running it on a toaster, it doesn't really matter.

Would anybody have an idea why debian sid is showing up as stretch in screenfetch, archey, lsb_release -a etc?

I have change my sources to unstable. Is this just how it is recognized now?

Here is my sources.list.

###### Debian Main Repos
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable non-free contrib main

Installed from Xfce live Jessie upgraded to testing and finally upgraded to sid. I thought this would be the best method besides a net install which is not feasible for me atm due to horrible rural internet connection.

Unless you bought a debian CD, you had to download everything anyway. You had to download it again when you upgraded.
You downloaded more stuff than you would have with a net install, because the regular CD comes with more software than you installed.
Unless you're installing on a PC that has no internet connection at all, there's no reason not to use the netinstall iso.

Can someone clear up password authentication and SSH for me?

I did the whole private-public key configuration and made it so I can only authenticate via key

You will no longer be able to ssh until you replace your old public key. If it's a server that you have no physical access to, you may be locked out.
Local login will continue to work, unless you completely disable the password for your user (with passwd, not ssh).

I don't think you can run a distro on a GPU yet.

Or to answer your intended question, anything that lets you install current propietary drivers without a hassle.
>>
>>59622640
>Ubuntu was locking up for my 980ti
On nvidea driver or on nouveau? Locking up has likely nothing to do with X, and most likely was caused by nouveau driver's issues with acceleration (e.g. there is some fedora faq where they tell you to add "nouveau.noaccel=1" boot parameter if you experience lock-ups on nividia cards). So you can do that (set noaccel) or install nvidia driver and with nvidia's blob it should just werk on any distro
>>

all distros use the same drivers

How exactly is the Debian project infringing on Pixar's rights then? Before they can get convicted* of anything, they would have to break a law first. It's legal to talk to your friends about "Sid" and whatever the other names are, and you can even name your cat, your couch or your car after them. Why not a distro?

There shouldn't be many issues if you update regularly, usually they appear because you're skipping versions. Also, I recommend making backups or snapshots so you can just undo an update if something goes wrong.

Why would you want to use the new Linux when you don't want to use the new Linux?
>>
>>59623627
You need to reboot if you need to load modules. Sunday a friend of mine came to my home with a NTFS key, I had to reboot because the old kernel was not able to find its modules.
>>
>>59623627
You need to reboot after a kernel update on arch. It doesn't keep the old kernel around, so if you need to load any new modules, you're fucked. Also afaik it doesn't restart any services like debian, so either you have to do it manually, or you'll have a potentially unstable system until you reboot.

>>59623661
I have an ssd, it still takes more than 10 seconds with typing in the encryption password and everything.
LTS kernels are even older than the one I'm using, compiling my own takes like 30 minutes of 100% cpu usage and doesn't solve anything. I do want to have a recent kernel, I just don't care about updating it every day.

The issue with the programs is more about all the stuff that is loaded in them, also they're not the same every time. Autostart doesn't really help. Also I have like 20 shells open all in different dirs with different histories, tmux sessions, etc. I don't like closing it all just for a reboot.
>>
>>59623702
I guess if you have ocd, using the system for which reboot is preferred is very annoying until you reboot. So you just don't update so you don't have to choose b/w wasting time on reboot+restarting all apps+continuing work from where you were on vs anxiety

Cinnamon is written with gtk, it is basically gnome that has interface simmilar with win xp. It is traditional, but i didn't like the lack of configuration options or sth like this. It's idea is to feel familiar.

Kde is written with qt, out of the box it looks like widows as well, but with a few clicks you can change anything. The gui programs you get out of the box (like file manager) are crazy configurable and powerfull. It MAY not be the stablest thing in the world, but it is totally fine. If you don't have supported gpu, it will cause problems or will break or something.

Both of them are heavy on resources, but will work even on shittier PCs. On old hardware the answer is a WM or Lxde or xfce.
I haven't use none of them in the last cuple of months, so don't judge me too hard.

Debian uses a deblobbed kernel and has better policies about free software, as well as having a better default DE.

i'm not certain you can remove a device node with 'rm'
either way, it's a device node, not a regular file (these are proper terms)
only writing to the device node can wipe the contents of the drive, removing the device node only removes access to the contents of the drive

for a shitty analogy, think of a straw in a glass of water, the glass being the drive, the water being the contents, and the straw being the device node
a regular file would be the water itself, the device node just provides access

Create a new partition and move the contents of your /home to it. Add a line to /etc/fstab so it actually gets used as your home partition. You should do this from a live cd.

Keep in mind that you don't have to do this to change your OS. You can also just make a backup of your home folder and copy it to your new installation. And don't expect everything to work perfectly if you use the same home with a new distro.

/pol/ is the same. The only thing different is the values. Bump limit is different and /pol/ has 15 pages now I think.

Okay. Well, any post that gains traction ends up being deleted before it reaches the bump limit, let alone 15 pages, it seems, .

You're overreacting but /pol/ has way too many people on it and moves way too fast for it to be worthwhile not to mention how much of it is shilling. A huge chunk of it is subtle shilling for youtubers and the like. Even 'negative' posts help generate activity for them. e.g. people like paul joseph watson, styxhexenhammer, and varg. Another huge chunk is organizations like ctr or shareblue. You'll come to realize it eventually. Some of that goes on here on /g/ everyday also to a much lesser extent but they tend to OP threads and stay inside of them so it's not as much of a bother.

Welcome to foogy looty, the best thread(s) on /g/

It was a little hyperbole as an attempt at humour, but the HWNDU posts were being constantly deleted, which were gaining a lot of attention. That was what I was referring to, subtly.

Cheers for the welcome. From what I have seen, I think I'll enjoy it here. Especially the Linux and programming threads.

you will need a local repo, notice you said
>>How do I download
So you will need somewhere to download from..
you can setup your own repos, or you can get some stuff from the Debian CD/DVDs so you may have some stuff you can download(including deps) from the ISO set.
