In the late-70's/early-80's, computer fans would build their own modems to connect to early online networks. They'd solder up a circuit board to specification (perhaps making some tweaks of their own to a pre-existing guide or diagram), and load in their own software to run the thing.
Let's say you decided to build your own router using the same approach. How much engineering/technical education would be required for you to even begin to approach this task?
