>Wifi disconnects after resuming from suspend (bug since 2012).
i've seen this only on a small handful of machines. on those it was easily fixed by making an alias to one of the following commands and running it after resume:
1.
sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

2.
sudo service network-manager stop && sleep 7 && sudo service network-manager start

>Apport crashes immediately after installation (bug since 2014).
this happens so rarely it's a joke now, and even if it does happen, it doesn't affect workflow at all.

>It's slow as fuck and comes with Amazon installed.
amazon installed... what are you on about? it's a search lens and can be turned off with a simple click (pic related). this was remedied releases ago, and even the instruction on fixubuntu are outdated (though you can turn it off via unity tweak tool as well, it's just redundant).

tldr: everything you've said is over-exaggerated fud.

I am running Xubuntu on all my thinkpads and my server.

Unity is the ugliest DE made. XFCE4 has its bugs and needs some fiddling but it's the best.

I would run it on my desktop but my only legit reason is there's no good musicbee alternative on linux. I want to browse my whole music library and have album cover pictures next to the songs. I know this might be the most autistic thing ever but I want it. Otherwise I use cmus.

Oh well, also I needed to use ps and other Adobe products for studies, laptop has 4 gig ram, so its not enough for VM, also another thing to mention is that there is so much less software torrents for Linux as there is for Windows.. I'd been an Arch user for some years before switching to Ubuntu. Honestly, at some point you want to choose a distro which takes the least time between installing, and getting actual work done. I chose Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, installed everything I need, removed the bloatware, and couldn't be happier. It just works.

>>59609892
Pretty much this.

Ubuntu is easy and Unity is one of the better DEs but it spontaneously sudokus, shits out error messages for everything and comes with actual bloat. I've had to laugh off errors popping up in my face in front of colleagues.

>"Why do you use Linux, anon?"
>"Let me show you"
>PROBLEM DETECTED
>Have to click multiple times because there's about 5 errors hiding behind the one
>coworker laughs at me
>Have to Super + F2 to restart Unity after it crashes
>"I-it's good, I-I swear!"

I'll never live that down.

Fedora is just better all around and has the de facto best DE.

Heavy in what way? It's pretty light. You just get a couple of Gnome apps and that's it. I have noticed a bunch of languages installed, like Lua, but that's only because I tried learning it one day. I don't know of any heavy stuff myself.

You're right about the third-party repos taking a while to play catch up with the newest release though. I know there's UnitedRPMs that makes a point of supporting the new release faster than RPMFusion but I haven't personally used it.

what daily activities do you need to use a command line for on a modern LiGNUx distro? the bug you mention affects a minscule amount (e.g. <2%) of machines.

office software: LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Kingsoft Office, or Write!

music player / manager: Clementine, gMusicBrowser, DeaDBeeF etc...

video player / manager: VLC or SMPlayer or Totem etc...

web browser: Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Chromium etc...

torrenting: qBitTorrent, Deluge, Ktorrent etc...

games: steam, tons of source ports with graphical interfaces and launchers, basic shit like chess, minesweeper blah blah blah

all these things and countless more items can be run via simply clicking an icon on your menu / launcher, just like OS X or Windows

so you have no idea what you're talking about

Pretty much fucking irrelevant when it's more of a constant stream of this bullshit every time you need something new or an upgrade kills something. Maybe if you can get the official ubuntu help forums to never list the solution as a command line or config file edit ever again it would matter, of course not a damn thing would ever get "fixed" that way.

I do have it installed, but am wasting my life playing video games currently, or maybe I have good reasoning to at the current time, I do hobby development work and all things unrelated to gaming there. I try to stay somewhat fresh in windows in case I ever land a job in IT, but it's probably an excuse to spend more time playing games. I find windows 7 lack of features regarding window management somewhat annoying. No built in always on top, at least they have tiling somewhat with Super+arrowkeys. Windows starts to become more a pain in the ass when trying to program things, and actually have it be fun while doing it, so whenever I get seriously motivated to make something I'll boot into ubuntu.

Kek @ the Debian shills. Let me break it down.

Debian stable = one million year old packages. Ok for servers, horrible for desktops.

Debian testing = I used it myself for 2 years and I admit, I fell for a meme here. Gets security updates weeks after stable. Read that sentence again and let it sink in. Everybody recommending testing is either retarded or doesn't know what he's talking about.

Debian sid = I don't know. Debian says you shouldn't use it as a normal user, make out of that what you will.

tl:dr Debian for servers. That's it.

On many levels, Fedora is superior. But supporting a first-timer on installation is not one of them as you can just install it and end up with a broken system.

Not that anon, but Debian's stable packages are ancient. They're going to be a little better now that 9.0 will eventually come out, but even then, they will be behind.
At least their kernel will be upgraded, that way I can run a live image without any GPU problems in case I need it.

I don't use ubuntu because I'm mentally disabled and play bad vidya games. Legitimate enough? However at some point I will probably dual boot as from what I understand vidya support is getting quite good. (At least for games I enjoy.)

I dropped the idea of using Ubuntu when the development team stopped caring.

In 16.04 (an LTS), you couldn't install .deb files properly and the right-click Dash functionality was useless because they didn't bother to integrate GNOME Software correctly.

It's clear that they don't care anymore and Unity 8 will be too little, too late. People have moved on and rightly so.

In all seriousness though, Fedora is great. Providing it works with your machine of course. I noticed in the Gnome 3.24 changelog something that implies that Wayland doesn't play nicely with integrated graphics + a video card but that just means that'll be a non-issue in Fedora 26.

Gnome is also really the best DE once you set it up to your liking. There's dash to panel if you want a more windows layout but then there's dash to dock + maximus among other things. Either way, Shelltile is the only must have extension. I hated it up until I gave it a chance and stopped regurgitating the mobile UI meme.

I still have no idea why Ubuntu 16.04 feels less stable than fedora 25 although its supposed to be their "stable" release.

On fedora the kernel and lots of low-level system related stuff get updates every 2-3 days and I never had any issues.

Used it besides openSUSE til 14.10.
After systemd got shoved down their necks, ubuntu made a nosedive in terms of stability.
A shame, they should've flipped debian the bird and went fully independent, sticking with their own software.

It's a highly-visible bug that's been around for 3 years now. If you install Ubuntu on a first-timer's computer and immediately upon reaching the desktop, there are three popups that say "SYSTEM PROBLEM DETECTED", it's not a good first impression. The devs seem to want people to use Apport, but don't bother fixing things like this.

>amazon installed... what are you on about? it's a search lens and can be turned off with a simple click
Sure, but there's no way to remove it in 16.04 without editing the source code in unity-webapps-common. There are ways to hide it, but it's always there.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

If their flagship shell is shunned then why the fuck should anyone trust the rest of it? Not to mention everything needs special patches to work with the Unity clusterfuck.

I've tried desperately to dual boot it and Win10, but every time it tells me it successfully installed, I reboot and it goes straight to Win10, doesn't even ask me which OS to use. Booting back into Live and running boot-repair just shows that boot sectors aren't mounting, and I have no idea what to do. This is a 3 mo. old laptop, I haven't fucked with the disk aside from making the partitions, which isn't exactly rocket science, so I don't know what could be stopping it from installing what it needs to boot. Maybe it's a GRUB2 issue, I don't know. AFAIK, I'm still using WBM to boot.

I really want to use Ubuntu, but it's made it difficult to install and I'm running out of patience with it.
>>
Real reason? I am using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Ubuntu lacks rolling releases and it is painful to use apt dist-upgrade or upgrade or update every single time. The PPA functionality is also something I am not fan of. Then there is the whole Amazon integration issue, but I think it was fixed.

Ubuntu Budgie/Solus is a close second, but I don't install either because I think I'd miss Unity too much.

I noticed on my friend's laptop that windows 10 goes straight to boot without showing the BIOS logo. try disabling fast boot and maybe, if you have a second drive installing ubuntu on it and leaving win10 within your first drive

If I'm not mistaken ubuntu has a recovery option and as long as you don't mess around with graphics and X.org related stuff I don't see a way for beginners to fuck up a linux distro.
