Is it too much to ask a portable device with a Linux based operating system that can play video and has a qwerty keyboard under $100?
I know about the PocketCHIP, and It's almost perfect except that it looks so ungodly nerd. Know about something that I can actually take out-doors?

One of those Chinese folding tablets with a keyboard?
buy used netbook, install gentoo. next.
Pinetop, or Pinebook, don't remember, is rumoured to be available in the coming weeks/months.

Thanks but I'm looking for something under 5 inches of screen size

This turboniche autism shit needs to stop. Just fuck off.

You're gonna have to save.

or wait

>>59577526
Thats a 7" but yeah I already bought in on ubuntu. ACTUALLY getting ubuntu might be tricky cause there's the hardware blobs and shit. Not sure if they'll chink out of licenses or chink out of promises.
>>59577422
>>59577526
or build it myself with some ARM board. But I'm not smart enough to do it without a highly detailed "for dummies" guide
Thanks. I'll start saving and wait to see how gud that GPD Pocket runs. Wish it was smaller though
Gpd pocket
Pyra
Zero Terminal (coming soon)
>>59579274
>Zero Terminal
I didn't knew about this one. Probably the nearest thing to my ideal device. I wish I could make it a little bit thiner. But there isn't other alternative so I'm thinking real seriously about making one if i can find enough info about how to build it
Thanks anon!
>>59576459
What about gpd win?
EOMA68 is our future
>>59579931
Cool
>>59579905
Is great, I read somewhere it can run Linux and the WIFI works. But a little expensive, i would need to save and i wanted something to buy tomorrow. I've been the whole day googling but it's either saving (not under $100) or building myself (time consuming).
>>59579931
Oh yeah, what happened to that thing?
I first knew about this when it was half way to be funded, then it got funded...and I forgot the thing.
>>59580350
Suppose to come out in July.
Just buy a phone retard.
A physical keyboard on something under 5" is useless anyway.
>>59580398
I hope they deliver and this leads to some other blob-less devices, I want less blobs in ARM because it makes it easier to use mainline linux on the device. Which means longer software support.
>>59580440
>A physical keyboard on something under 5" is useless anyway.
Blatantly false. My phone's got a 3.1" screen and its keyboard is better than any touchscreen piece of shit I've ever used.
>>59580440
>Just buy a phone retard.
I have a phone. What's wrong with wanting something specific?
>A physical keyboard on something under 5" is useless anyway.
It's not like i want it to code in it. But I'll need to type sooner of later. Currently I have an old blackberry, it isn't perfect but i like it way more than typing on a touchscreen.
>>59576459
Pocketchip's fun but the damn buttons are insanely hard to press and wear your thumbs out.
Word to the wise.
>>59577150
Under 5 inches??? And you're planning to watch video on it???
Are out of your mind???
>>59582106
They're not that bad, I irc on mine from time to time. Some of the Fn symbols are awful and getting used to staggered numbers is pretty weird though. Maybe pocket will be better.
>>59579931
>EOMA68
>>59576459
i use the pocketChip out doors. Also no one looks at you so i dont know why you care.
>>59582869
its a nice little serial device with its accessible pins and plenty of software and wifi and shit right there.
>>59582331
damn I want that. released or available schematics?
>>59580440
>A physical keyboard on something under 5" is useless anyway.
>>59582127
>Under 5 inches??? And you're planning to watch video on it???
Well maybe 4.5-5.5".
>>59582127
I used to watch movies on my iPod Nano and its 2" screen, would definitely do it again.
>>59582106
>>59582209
Thanks, I had doubts about the keyboard since I first saw pictures of the device. I admit it's still a great value for the price
>>59583410
It is a really shitty keyboard don't get me wrong, it's just not enough to really make it unusable unless your whole plan is to type on it 24/7.
>>59583423
Maybe a keyboard to go on top of those bare dome switches would improve both the keyboard feel and device looks
OpenPandora
Thank me later
>>59583722
Probly, there's a good amount of space above them to match the screen frame depth too. I'm no 3d printing guy or anything so I dunno what you can do in that regard but it seems like it's designed to be pretty moddable from the get go.
>>59579513
Hey it's like a Nokia N900 running linux except more powerful, more ports, thicker and you can easily replace the keyboard if a key break
>>59583807
no sim, but that's good thing i think. gotta get me that new pi and make this though. it's really neat looking.
>>59583340
I watched movies on xperia pro 3.7" screen no problem but 2.1" on Nokia E70 was just too small for me despite having relatively high dpi.
>>59580440
I NEED PICO-8 BITCH
>>59580440
>A physical keyboard on something under 5" is useless anyway.
And a touch keyboard isn't? Touchscreen keyboards are fucking garbage tech, in literally zero scenarios are they superior to a physical keyboard in the same context.
>>59587197
What even is pico about? It sucks on the pocket chip for whatever that's worth.
>>59587225
They are superior when space is limited, anyone arguing otherwise, including you is pic related.
>>59587247
They are always superior. Why're you posting selfies like they have something to do with your opponents? Nobody cares how much of a faggot you look like.
>>59587247
>Touchscreen is superior when space is limited
Nah, you can have a physical keyboard in a small device. Like my blackberry. Of course if you need a big screen in a small device then on-screen keyboard is the only option
>>59576459
>I know about the PocketCHIP, and It's almost perfect except that it looks so ungodly nerd.
The keyboard on that thing is shit and the app launcher for it is horribly broken. To add apps you have to edit a JSON file, and if it isnt one of their shitty bundled apps, every time you hit the home key and then try to switch back to the app, it will launch a new instance of it.
>>59589498
>To add apps you have to edit a JSON file
Holy shit it's true http://blog.nextthing.co/play-minecraft-on-your-c-h-i-p-pocketc-h-i-p/
>Modify the Pocket Home configuration file to display the Minecraft icon and launch the game.
>sudo nano /usr/share/pocket-home/config.json
Couldn't this be automatic if they just read the launchers in /usr/share/applications?
>and if it isnt one of their shitty bundled apps, every time you hit the home key and then try to switch back to the app, it will launch a new instance of it.
That sucks
>>59578095
My fear is that by the time we see how good it is the price will jump by 200$ (like they said the plan to).
Seriously considering pre purchasing it.
>>59590141
Thanks for the info anon
I don't like pre-buying so if that happens then I'll just get a GPD WIN after the GPD pocket is ship. But that's if I can't build me a zero terminal.
>>59591263
I assume we'll see the spike in prices around June, which is when they ship the products.
I hope they'll release a few for reviewers and such so we'll have more info before that.
Another interesting point to consider is that if they intend to raise the price by 50% when they launch, it could mean they anticipate the demand will meet this price.
But I'm speculating here

Is the C.H.I.P faster than the Zero?
>>59592425
We'll have to wait and see
>>59589498
>>59590023
it's a standard linux system with a terminal, thats always been my go to way to handle things. iirc their launcher shortcut was alt+enter instead of alt+f2 for obvious reasons.
