If you're an idiot with a stupid question you should be in this thread. Hell, most questions should be in this thread, you're stupid if you think you deserve your own thread.

Hi /g/! I want to do a full disc encryption (maybe excluding boot partitions) of a dualbooting laptop.
I dbaned and reformated the drive and was thinking about partitioning the drive like this:
1. unencrypted primary linux /boot partition
2. encrypted extended linux partition
a. logical swap partition
b. logical / partition
3. unencrypted extended windows partition
a. logical recovery partition
b. encrypted logical windows partition (no efi partition, laptop uses bios)
4. encrypted primary ntfs partition with files to be mounted under windows or linux

I'm using win 7 home premium and arch antergos, i wanna encrypt windows and storage partition with veracrypt and linux swap and / with a built in encryption

is this partitioning ok?
what order should i install and encrypt?

If I buy a 2TB HDD running at 5400 RPM (instead of 7200) for videos, images, etc, storage; will it affect things like watching videos, movies, etc, knowing the programs used to open such files are on my SSD?

How does that work? Am I fine having 4k videos or whatever on said "slow" HDD since the SSD will do the work of reading it or?... I'm not sure I properly understand the correlation here.

>Can do that with much older and slower drives too without noticing their age.
Well I checked my old HDDs and they were all 7200 as well (even the 232GB Seagate ones) thus why I'm a bit troubled.

It'll primarily be used to watch stuff so I'm a bit paranoid, I don't want to have playback issues and such.

So I'm trying to download some video stream from the nets and it's getting quite boring to do, because it's divided in a fuckton of ts files. Basically like this:

http://somefagwafflesite.net/media/randomnumbers/videopart_1.ts
http://somefagwafflesite.net/media/randomnumbers/videopart_2.ts

and so on, I know there's more than 100 parts so it's a little bit annoying to copy and paste as many fucking files, not gonna lie,

Is there a wget script or anything similar that I can use to gather all the files it can until it's trying to download one that doesn't exist?

Let me ask you, what type of games were you planning on playing on laptop?
I'm still standing strong on not using laptops for gaming because they're usually overpriced as shit, temps gets really hot no matter what, and also battery life.
If you want a good, cheap laptop in general we can help you with that, a Thinkpad will serve you fine. If you have more money than brains, then you can get a overpriced bulky "gaming" laptop that will burn your lap and dick off (literally).

Yeah apparently I could even watch 5 1080p anime at once if I wanted on a 5400 RM from what I understood about its readspeed and the amount of speed needed in video playback situations.

So if I got that right I should (or can) definitely go with a 5400 RPM (WD Blue) for a storage/media HDD. I also read new 5400 RPM HDDs are often faster than old 7200 ones because of... stuff I didn't exactly understand.

I'm running Trisquel-Mini 6.0 (Toutatis) on an IBM ThinkCentre (MT-M 8183-WYQ), and it is running nicely but the LXDE uses too much of the total 512MB of RAM for the integrated AGP chip to use the maximum of 256MB RAM. This prevents Netflix (which I do have working through Chrome) from playing video at an acceptable frame-rate, even with low-quality streaming selected. I'd like to find a way to minimize the system requirements so that the AGP has more available RAM. Could I somehow use a command-line program to access Netflix, giving the browser and AGP-chip most of the system resources? Something similar to w3m? I can live without a desktop, this computer is really just an internet terminal.

I'm in the penultimate year of my Astrophysics masters degree, I've done 3 formal programming courses with the most advanced of those being an N-body simulation of the solar system in Java.

Since then I've done a summer project where I half-programmed a VR game using Unreal Engine/C++ and I've made a little shitty codebase (~2k lines of C++) to do a big solo semester project of analysing some data.

I've got an internship coming up at a proper big-ish software development company that I'm fairly sure took me on because of a mix of nepotism (the guy in the interview went to my university) and the apparent similarity of my summer project to their line of work.

The thing is I'm fucking terrified that I have no idea what I'm doing with C++ or programming in general and I'll show up and get laughed out the door when they ask me to implement a simple algorithm or something. Your degree tells them that you're brights and you work hard.

I'd carry on working on that VR game to keep coding fresh in your mind.
I might also try reading a few programming books.
>The C Programming Language (very readable)
>C++ in 21 Days (very old, very basic, and very good)
>The C++ Programming Language (you need to have a good feel on what programming is beforehand)

Oh!

You could start with the books that I started with.
The free pdf from the 80s at the bottom of the page.
And they are fantastic.

Dude I work for an ISP that does fiber, broadband, and DSL. I can tell you flat out when you call in to tech support that we do very little in the way of actually helping you.

Our regular process is as follows -

>Get modem model # from CX
>ask cx to read off status lights
>Have cx powercycle modem
>Wait for status lights to come back on
>Run line test to check signal strength
>If you're wireless, at this point we tell you to fuck off or hardwire to TS further
>If you can hardwire, we verify PPP credentials for non DHCP customers, or have you run a handful of speedtests to see if your speed matches 70% of your provisioned speeds
>If it does, we tell you to fuck off
>If it doesn't, we send out a technician

If you want the basic command we use to test packet loss, it's 'ping google.com -n 100' in your command prompt. If all else fails, we use 'netsh int ip reset' in cmd and then send a tech out.

Literally anyone can get a job working as ISP tech support, as long as you can follow a troubleshoot script.

Alright. I used nano to write .xinitrc (I didn't have one) with
 exec google-chrome-stable

xkill -all

xkill: unable to open display ""

Try startx.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to figure out how to tell your display manager to run chrome instead of a window manager.

Googling for someone else that's tried to put linux on their MBP of similar vintage is your best option.

Hibernation and sound and likely to be driver issues.

You could open up your sound mixer and see if you have two volume controls for your headphones.
One specifically for the headphones, and another master volume.
I would use alsamixer from the command line, because I trust that to talk to things more directly.

You can probably boot off a usb stick by pressing the alt button and you reboot your MBP.

My Mac's kernel is Darwin 14.5.0, and my Linux kernel is Debian 4.6.4, so I think that might be why. This page is kinda similar to my problem: https://superuser.com/questions/482933/bash-regex-on-osx-vs-linux-oddities

Here is the regex, which runs fine on my Darwin Mac, but fails on my Debian Linux:

 objSearch="\"*\": {"

Here is the line where I run the comparison.

 if [[ $1 =~ $objSearch  ]]

I tried an alternative way in my Linux via egrep, but it then returns me almost everything in the JSON, anyway.

egrep '\"*\":[[:space:]]\{'

How can I make this regex work in my Debian Linux?

I know there are Linux libraries that trivialize JSON searching like JQ and whatnot, but I'm limited to using only system standard stuff.

It's okay, people can fuck with the boot partition, but if they have physical access to the drive and enough time to fuck with it, you probably would've noticed. For an attack to work on boot they would then second access to the laptop.

On Arch Wiki, I'd read the dm-crypt page for an excellent guide on encrypting.

I'm already using Python, to do the key search. But I'm trying to use regex to do string manipulation and trim "layers" from the JSON to recurse deeper, if it's not found the first time.

I've made some progress by doing this.

 objSearch="\"*\": {"
altSearch="\".*\":[[:space:]]\{"
if [[ $1 =~ $objSearch ]] || [[ $1 =~ $altSearch]];then

But then my regex to trim the JSON fails. Works again on my Mac, fails on my Linux:

jsonTrim=${1/\"*\": {/ }

I haven't been able to find an alternative regex to this one, yet.

I'll keep grep -o in mind, though, thanks.

A data type, an enum is used to represent a range of values with text in your code so that you don't have to sprinkle magic values everywhere. It also makes it easier to read your code.

Hello /sat/! Looking for help with my little sister's Android phone. I recently bought her an LG K7 to replace her older and obsolete LG L90 that was 4G only. Issue is that the phone only came with 8GB internal storage. 4GB of which is already taken up by Android OS. We're on the T-Mobile network and her phone is currently on Android 5.1.1 with all security patches. As far as I know, 5.1.1 is incapable of formatting her microSD storage for use as internal storage as that's an Android 6.0.1 benefit.

Is there anything or any app I can use to force installed apps onto the SD card without breaking functionality? She uses Snapchat, Kik, and other such teenage girl apps to do her equivalent of shit posting with her friends.

Otherwise we're stuck waiting for the 6.0.1 OTA update (if the K7 will even get it at all). Help me help my imoto /g/. I feel bad enough as it is having bought her that phone. Seemed too good to be true at $90 brand new. Should have just bought her the Samsung S6 they had for $200.
