This thing is tempting.
>4:3 High DPI screen
>MacBook quality design
>100MB of free Verizon LTE a month
>Backlit keyboard
>64GB SSD
>Less than $400
What's the deal with this? Why are they so cheap? How compatible are they with Ubuntu, and will the LTE data work under it?
This is the Super Chromebook Pixel 2013 btw

>What's the deal with this? Why are they so cheap?
because it only has a 64GB ssd and has poor battery life
>>59572006
That's more than most Chromebooks. A cheap Celeron based touch Chromebook is at least $300.
How bad is the battery life?
>>59572006

Because there's a 2015 version before they discontinued production to not get in the way of their Pixel brand of phones.
Planning on picking one up later this year to use as a daily driver.
It's a shame that they stopped production, they're the only chromebooks worth getting.
>>59572088
same, waiting for the 2015 to come down in price a little bit
>>59572088
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromebook_Pixel#3:2_display
It's 3:2 anon.
>>59572115
Google's own Chromebook site has the 2015 Chromebook Pixel 2 front and center on their main page, but you can't buy it anymore.
>>59572141
Oh shit you're right. I wonder where I read 5:4 from.
>>59571971
>why so cheap?
> chrome "os"
> 64 gb ssd
> low specs (probably, didn't check)
>>59571971
It has shit battery life. The 2015 version which has better battery life is literally unavailable anywhere.
>>59572088
>>59572115
Besides battery life and USB C, I don't see any differences. Is it really worth double the cost?
Maybe I'm just out of the loop with Chromebooks, but an i3 laptop with an ssd, highres panel, touchscreen, good build quality, and an LTE modem for this cheap seems like a ridiculous deal.
The only other option I can find is one HP makes and it's $500, with no LTE modem, a weaker CPU, and half the storage.
>>59571971
>MacBook quality design
ewwwww
>>59572201
looks good for 400. has i7, so maybe it's possible to install a proper os
>>59572190
>>59572201
The only problem is you are probably going to want to install your own OS on it, which will hurt some battery life. I plan on trying to get either Gentoo or Arch on mine, they're worth it.
>>59572006
How difficult would it be to upgrade the SSD?
>>59572219
i own a macbook pro myself, but you have to agree that pixel looks great. No others make a good job copying macbook like that
>>59572292
>>59572257
The one I am talking about is the 2013 model with LTE.
>>59572291
I believe it's all solder on, unfortunately.
>>59572270
If I were to get one I would use crouton at most. I would use this for browsing and listening to music most likely.
>>59572306
Wats dat
>>59572328
macbook pro with chrome os
>>59572292
It's the only alternative to a Macbook looks wise I've seen.
It's specs seem decent, but battery life is apparently terrible? The 64gb is what kills it. I've never used chromeOS so I'd like to be able to dual boot into other OS's.
The 3:2 screen looks incredible though.
>>59572342
I did hear the only reason Google launched that model in the first place was because they were tired of seeing Google employees hauling Macbooks around the office
>>59572321
crouton is a bitch to get working on ARMv7, hopefully it's easier on x86.
>>59572328
Chromebook Pixel 2
>>59572292
I think it has enough changes to be considered an innovation rather than a copy. Definitely inspired by though, no argument.
>>59572321
still has x86 cpu. standard pc specs, should be possible to install a proper os. google that to be sure
The keyboard doesn't have all the function keys.
Actually looking back on it, the i5-3427U is more powerful than I thought. It beats out M7 and 5500U.
>>59571971
You had me all excited only to find out that it's an old Chromebook
>>59572450
Why does that matter? It's still x86.
It's not the LS (the one with the 12 hour battery life, dual usb-c, i7, 16gb ram etc.) that's why it's so inexpensive
>>59572401
And it's not made by lenovo.
>>59572401
12 should be good enough.
>>59572470
Because I already knew about and decided not to buy it years ago.
>It's still x86.
Where did I say anything about architecture?
>>59571971
>MacBook quality design
>100MB of free Verizon LTE a month
>Backlit keyboard
>64GB SSD
They are not pros.
>>59572836
100MB of free cellular Internet is certainly a pro.
>>59572401
>try to press backspace
>press poweroff instead
every fucking time
>>59572861
Power needs to be held, you won't be turning it off just by tapping it accidentally.
>>59571971
a t520/w520 cost like $200 tops and you can install a wwan card and get free 1gb/month internet from freedompop.
while it isn't a 2k screen it's the best 1080p tn with a higher gamut than the pixel.
>>59571971
Did you mean less than $1,400, OP? What deal is this?
>>59572905
It's a three year old laptop.

>>59572953
>thumbnails are 3.5MB each
>>59572930
Oh, the original. I had that as a corp laptop. It was a shit deal at the time when it cost $1200, but < $400 isn't bad. I wouldn't want ChromeOS as a laptop OS though. Even with Android apps it was a sad experience. Never tried running GNU on it.
I later upgraded to the Pixel 2, and I actually liked it way better just because of the USB-C charging and knock-for-battery feature. I vowed to never buy another device with non-standard charging again.
>>59572885
Freedom pop is a scam, even if you didn't get charged you still have to deal with Sprint towers.
Pixel is an IPS touchscreen, and the build quality is much better.
And you are compared used to new, a used like new pixel is $320.
I have the 2015 i7 one, running /g/entoo of course
Ignore the naysayers, it's glorious.
>10 hours battery with light compiling
>nice keyboard
>3:2 high res screen
>you can murder someone with it
>no UEFI
The only downside is the 64 GB SSD.
>>59572291
it's soldered, but you can put a pic related in the sd card reader.
Wish i had a reason to purchase a laptop, it would certainly be this.
>island keys

Supposedly Verizon killed off the free 100MB a month.
