Uhh, what's happening with Ubuntu?

>#1 distro for years
>Mint becomes more popular
>then suddenly Debian beats it out
>now Manjaro is also ahead of Ubuntu
>>
>>59559788
distrowatch only counts pageviews on their site. i.e. powerusers only.
>>
>>59559805
>powerusers overwhelmingly use Linux Mint
>>
>>59559788
>Uhh, what's happening with Ubuntu?
Unity.
/thread
>>
Literally can't even find the download link without spending 5 minutes on their website, whereas it was the first thing you saw on the page in 2010.
>>
>>59559788
everyone falls for computer illiterate blogposters who recommend mint as best windows-like distro
>>
>>59559916
Am I the only one who likes Unity?

It's a nice DE, albeit I don't agree with most of Canonical's NIH. Since the Gnome 3 clusterfuck, Unity was the friendliest UI I used on Linux.
>>
>>59559788
Manjaro just released v. 17.0
It's getting some extra attention.
>>
>>59559788
Distrowatch rank != Users
>>
How do they even know which distro visitors are using? Surely all distros aren't modifying the user agent of the web browsers in their repositories, are they?
>>
>>59559856
muh sides
>>
>>59560254
That's not what the rank is. The rank is page hits on distrowatch
>>
>>59559788
Mint is in major distros, where it totally does not belong.
>>
>>59559788
Ubuntu tries their hardest to distance themselves away from the word "Linux" and they consistently try to hide that they're a GNU/Linux distro, they want to make it seem like they're a separate OS altogether, called Ubuntu.
Look on their website, they're describing it as a cloud platform now.
Go ahead and try to find a download link for Ubuntu, you can't.

Meanwhile, the 32/64bit network installer for debian is the first thing on the debian website.
>>
>>59559916
STFU. Unity is a great and thought out DE
>>59559788
Distrowatch points are meaningless. Ubuntu is the most popular by a large margin.
>>
>>59560396
Unity won't be the default DE next release.
>>
>>59560365
They want to make money. Desktop won't do that for them.
>>
>>59560476
Wait, how do they make money with ubuntu?
All their software is free and they don't charge money for support like redhat.
>>
>>59560460
17.04 has Unity 7 and it will stay until 18.04 or later.
Unity 8 is still Unoty though
>>
>>59560476
So they don't care about desktop users? Good thing I stayed away from that trash.
>>
>>59560501
Yes, thanks for clarifying that the next major release won't use unity.
>>
>>59560488
They give support for money. Also IaaS.

Uhh... okay.
>>

Pretend you're not a computer nerd and you're a computer illiterate who just found out windows spies on you and ill-advisedly wants to get away from windows so he searched "lunix" and ubuntu was the first thing on google.

How would they know to click on desktop?
>>
install manjaro
>>
>>59560598
Lunix is an another os. For me Mint is the first on giggle.

People who got in with babies first linux started moving distros?
>>

I fail to understand why anyone uses Manjaro.
It takes arch, a distro designed for minimalism and user specific customization, and then goes against the core values of the distro to bundle and package other garbage with it.
At least with antergos you're getting arch with some uninstallable bloat, but the Manjaro devs feel the need to make changes and then also include bloat.

It's only gamurrs ofc, but it's based on actual data points at least
>Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64 bit 20.91% -9.06%
>Ubuntu 16.10 64 bit 9.87% +1.60%
>Linux 64 bit 9.75% -1.51%
>Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS 64 bit 9.57% +9.57%
>Linux Mint 18.1 Serena 64 bit 7.18% +7.18%
>Other 42.73% -7.77%

http://stackoverflow.com/insights/survey/2016
>Speaking of the Linuxes, Ubuntu is tops among them with 12.3% of the entire OS market for developers. Fedora, Mint, and Debian accounted for 1.4%, 1.7%, and 1.9% of all responses, respectively.

Between these two it seems that nothing's happening to ubuntu and distrowatch's rating is just completely unrelated to actual distro usage (duh)

Powerusers stick with gentoo
>>
>>59562190
Why do people use services like Steam? It's quite literally botnet.
>>
>>59562254
My guess would be - to play video games
>>
>>59562000
They like a nice, preconfigured distribution? I think I have 780-ish packages on a new install, much better than 2100-ish on Munt or Ubongo. Uses 440mb too.
>>
>>59559788
Because Ubuntu users don't have to go to the forums every day to ask about issues their shitty distro is having or redownload the ISO because their shitty distro broke after updating Firefox.
>>
>>59559856
Doesn't Brian Kernighan use a Mac? Even power users will want something that doesn't get in the way at some point. That's why Arch and Gentoo are for toddlers.
>>
>>59559788

jesus fuck i know everyone here has a hateboner for canonical and ubuntu (and it's well deserved), but don't pretend to be fucking retarded just to get your point across
>>

Amazon spyware
>>
>>59559805
Powerusers don't use distrowatch.
>>
>>59562254
It's botnet the same way Amazon is. You go there to buy things and they don't bullshit their intentions of wanting you to buy things. It gets credibility for being one of the most straightforward botnets in existence. Plus video games.
>>
>>59562633
tbqh that icon with downward arrow is not well placed imo

>>59562681
I KNEW this dashboard icon was up to no good! Can't believe it spied on me all this time
>>
>>59562712
There used to be more than an icon anon, whatever you typed into the dashboard was sold to Amazon as telemetry data. That bulshit caused more people to install mint than Unity ever did. That's why Mint is number one, while Ubuntu slides into irrelevance.

I don't know exactly why its falling but I wanted to try it again after using
Fedora for the past 4 years (and I wanted to mess with the AMDGPU-PRO stuff)

That installer on the default install media is fucking atrocious.
You can't select software raid
It has a tendency to destroy your other attached disks
if you want anything more complex then a single disc install...good luck

funny thing is I don't remember the installer being that bad a few years ago
it is like they are removing features to make it appeal to Windows/macOS users
I guess choice is a scary thing now.
>>
>>59559788
Fucking Christ, the shills have been hard at work for the piece of shit that is Mint.
>>
>>59559788

fedora's coming for that ass
>>
Ubuntu.com gets more hits per day than Distrowatch gets in a year.

Distrowatch became irrelevant 12 years ago.
>>
>>59560598
What the fuck? How did the goal posts wind up outside of the stadium? They were here just a second ago.
>>
>>59562529
>its only some shit you didnt want in the first place, what does it matter?

Because I didn't want it in the first place?
>>
>>59559953
I think people like Unity itself well enough, but ever since their Amazon botnet fiasco, they've suffered some blowback and damage to their reputation.

Have you tried Unity 8 yet?

Try it, just have a look, see what is in store for Unity in the near future. Spoiler alert: it is literally fucking horrible shit.

I'll admit Unity in its current state is somewhat usable, but it is going to shit the bed fast. And I know Unity Classic or whatever they're going to call it when Unity 8 becomes default is still going to be supported but I don't trust Canonical enough to not fuck something up.
