I've been given an old Dell PowerEdge 2900 and I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. Is it overly under powered for any personal server work?
Ideas welcome for its usage.

I think those run 2x socket 771 quadcores usually, basicly 2x core2 quads.
They are quite powerfull still.
Post speccy.

Like 14 years old and will cost a fortune to run. A modern i3 probably has more horsepower.

I've yet to plug it in and install an OS yet.. I'll do that and see the specifics.

Probably blows the fuck out of the average chink SBC that passes for a server around here, you're not serving tons of users or storing and operating on shitloads of data as a home user.

In the age of diminishing returns, high-end multi socket Core 2 setups can still take on high-end Haslel systems now and again, and who gives a shit about an extra $10-$20 a month as long as you have fun with it and learn something.

It's useful for weighing down your trash cans.

Great systems. I used a 2950 as my home server for years. Load it up with ESXi 5.5 and some VMs and you'll be set.
