It's because of how meta/group packages work in Debian/Ubuntu. IIRC you need to first mark the package as explicitly installed, and then you can remove it safely.

It's different but not wrong.

I was trying to fix the fucking abominable font rendering OpenSUSE has. People online recommended installing namtrac:subpixel/freetype2 but when I added that repository and tried installing it, it said I already had freetype2 installed.

I'd use a distro that isn't an eyesore, but OpenSUSE is the only one that I've managed to successfully get running on my desktop at higher than 1024x768.
>>
>>59523699
Well of course you have freetype2 because everyone has freetype2, it is the font engine.
>>
>>59523708
Then why does everybody suggest installing namtrac:subpixel/freetype2, and if they're all talking shit then how do I make OpenSUSE usable?

The problem as far as I can tell is that for some stupid reason subpixel rendering can't be enabled on the version of freetype2 that OpenSUSE ships with.
>>
>>59523732
That's probly a different build, you can force zypper to install from a different repo if you want. You don't have to manually remove freetype2.

My guess is it's something like this

ttf-liberation fulfills the need "ttf-font"

if ttf-liberation is the only package installed fulfilling the need "ttf-font" all packages that require "ttf-font" get trashed too.

Literally just install another ttf-font and this won't happen.
>>
You all niggers are just too stupid to read manpages and understand how apt works. When you start removing a package X which was installed as part of Y, apt assumes you want to get rid of the whole collection, since X is MARKED as automatically installed as part of Y.

To solve the "problem" - which is imho more convenience when uninstalling - mark the program you want to remove as munually installed and it will remove itself without pulling the whole collection Y.

tl;dr RTFM
>>
>>59524430
Same goes for a program which is part of a DE too.
>>
>>59524430
Even if you do understand it, it's still stupid. If I wanted to get rid of the whole collection I'd say so. I want to remove {package}, so remove it.
>>
>>59524563
Well, dependencies, man. Assume you want PHP, so you install php-fpm and php-cli, php-fpm and php-common are installed. Then you decided that Go is better, so you get rid of php-fpm and what should apt do, keep php-common? It's stupid (I nuked a preinstalled DE several times when tried to remove openoffice), but can you propose a better solution which will not bloat a system?

It's hard to keep track of dependencies. This way you're less likely to accidentally remove something that is actually being used somewhere.
