Buying a x80 card from the previous generation is a stupid thing to do. The RX 480 is granted not as powerful, but thanks to drivers AMD cards get better with age while Nvidia does the exact opposite and makes their older cards weaker.

If you can get an 8GB RX 480 definitely do it. If not then GTX 980 is a fair choice. It is a couple % faster in some games right now (mostly goyimworks titles) but the like 1-2 years down the road its 4GB of VRAM will cuck you out of the ability to use high quality textures and other VRAM intensive stuff even in the situations where the card has enough horsepower for perfectly playable framerates. RX 480 will probably also have better resale value (especially the 8GB version).
If you are running some workloads that can be accelerated by CUDA then GTX 980 is the obvious choice, but if that was the case you wouldn't be here asking questions. PhysX is literally irrelevant btw, it has nothing to do with game mechanics in vidya, it's only for additional eye candy like more realistic fluids and shit, it's usually implemented so poorly you'd rather turn it off anyway (borderlands 2 was very guilty of this).
