Hey /g/
Picked up a HP Mini with 2gb of ram for cheap.

What distro should I put on here for performance? I plan on browsing the web and maybe playing quake or something.

Arch + XFCE or if you're a tiling demon wizard, i3.
I HEAR KDE Neon is actually pretty lightweight, your mileage may vary.
Debain also just works.

Woah, an HP product that survived for several years. You should put it in a museum.

Arch is heavyweight, despite the install process and headless base install. Debian is lighter weight. Gentoo would work, but be prepared for an install that takes forever; but after it's done it'll be fast as all hell. Void Linux is good too, make sure to use the musl variant.
Of all these, Debian is the most 'just werks.' Most broad support and use, so you'll have an easy time getting it set up and installed, and any problems will have lots of answers out there on the internet.

This. Arch +i3 runs great even on my T60p that can barely handle a full web browser.
>>
Install NixOS

Don't install Arch on old netbooks, they're dropping support i386 support later this year and the original Atom line weren't x64. I still need to get around to installing something other than Arch on my old EEE. Tiling WMs and in general setting things up to use the keyboard as much as possible does make a lot of sense on netbooks with their small touch pads.

I don't believe this shit when I read it on here. I've been shitposting all day from this destitute OLPC shitbox and even with the stock XP install there's no real problem handling most mainstream websites in moderation with an ad blocker.

Debian Unstable and XFCE or Gentoo and XFCE for the best results, I think.
>>
>>59457808
Build Gentoo on your desktop. Build it inside a VM or chroot.

Install built binary packages onto the laptop.

only the Atom N270 series was i686 only. if anon's netbook was manufactured in 2010 or later, chances are it has an N45x or N55x CPU, both of which are x64 compatible.
>>59457808
Check the CPU model.

Debian probably. Use whatever DE or WM you want, those netbooks ran Win7 fine enough back in the days when they were new. They'll handle gnome or whatever just fine. No experience with KDE though, I do not know how light or heavy it is.

Use LXDE of XFCE I guess if you particularly want to get a light option yet aren't quite wizardy enough for not using a DE.

But I'm using Gnome 3 just fine on an old core duo laptop. I used to use it just fine on an atom netbook.
