i've got to learn C++ and python for class so what resources and literature will give me an upper hand in trying to learn these?
Just like write code
You could probably learn the syntax with HackerRank or similar, then do a cute project like those on CyberDojo. Or make your own. Doesn't matter, just code. I'd just wait until the due date to 'learn' Python.

Whatever your professor recommends. What languages have you learned in the past? What will you be doing with these two?

A resource I find handy (depending on your programming background though) is https://learnxinyminutes.com/ to get a quick grasp of dozens of language's syntax.
