I recently installed Ubuntu to get my feet wet with Linux.

I have no sound. Sound only plays from the headphones I have, and not the monitor itself through HDMI.

I have my monitor connected to an RX480

Any suggestions?
I've already tried killing myself
Really? So you didn't bother to even look at the sound options? Go back to Windows and stay there dumb fuck.

I did, nigger. Audio levels show up, but no sound plays.

Did you try search in search engine?

Googled the problem, users report installing the latest driver update fixes it.

Installed it, gave me no errors, Ubuntu will no longer boot.

Ubuntu is buggy as fuck, don't use it as your first distro please. In the 4 months I used it, it was slow and kept giving error messages. It's a complete hack-together. Use another babby distro like mint m8

I personally hate Ubuntu, but this is absolute horse shit. Fuck off.
>>
>>59442162

I genuinely can't understand how mint can be better than ubuntu. Isn't Canonical supposed to be pretty big?
>>

It is, the guy's lying.
>>59441819
If you want babby's first distro, don't go with stock Ubuntu, it sucks ass.

Go with Xubuntu or Kubuntu, or alternatively, Solus Linux.
Also, if you haven't already, install the amdgpu-pro drivers instead of the standard default FOSS drivers for increased compatibility and performance .

I don't get this hate for Ubuntu. Shit mostly works out of the box and most issues are easily resolved using google.

I just switched to Cinnamon as Unity really doesn't suit me.

It could be that
>you didn't turn up the audio on the actual TV
>you haven't selected the TV as the audio device in sound settings

Mine works fine (also via HDMI).
Don't listen to these niggers saying stock ubuntu is bad.

The driver simply doesn't have that feature yet. The DAL code that AMD tried to put in the Linux kernel had too many abstractions, so there's no HDMI audio. It'll be in in a few months tops. Arch wiki:
>The open source AMDGPU driver relies on the DAL code that currently being worked on. Until DAL is mainlined, audio suppport for HDMI and DisplayPort will not be available. The only current way to get HDMI and DisplayPort audio is to install the AMDGPU-PRO driver.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU#No_HDMI.2FDP_Audio

So, use your damn headphones or speakers.

All these people are retards:

You're a fucking retard if you believe this

Honestly I hated ubuntu when first used LInux. If you truly want to know what's going on with your system, give the arch wiki a read.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
