This is a part of Windows' legacy. You can't create folders whose names match system devices. Other invalid folder names include CON, PRN, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9.

c:\>mkdir \\.\c:\con or c:\>md\\.\c:\con
c:\>DEL \\.\c:\con
c:\>rmdir \\.\c:\con

there were some special strings for them. it didn't cause any problems, but the folder would appear as computer or recycle bin and would link to that place. if you created folders inside of it you could only access them if you knew the full path because they couldn't be listed. was a nice way to hide stuff

>>59439086
You can't do that in Windows either. Windows filenames are made to be UNIX-compatible in pretty much everything but command line shells. You can enter filepaths such as /folder/file in any Windows software and, unless they're specifically programmed to reject it, it will work, with the presumption that / is the drive of the working directory.
>>
>>59439797
>that's just being reasonable

And look where that got you, I don't lose files because I understand that Windows has certain restrictions, I'd like to think that people on this board knew that, apparently not.

You can do that using Bash for Windows. Explorer will list the file/folder, but anything you attempt to do with them, including reading, writing, moving, etc. will fail, often with a misleading error message.

Recycle bin shows as
$Recycle.bin/
S-1-5-21-userid1/
S-1-5-21-userid2/

in the root of each partition. You can get your user id on from the registry.

There's a trick for folders, you've to rename the folder (right click > rename) adding a "-" symbol before last character ("AU-X") and then rename again (always right click > rename) adding a dot (".") after it ("AU-X.") but works only in windows 7.

This was our favourite way of hiding games on lab computers in college.

When I graduated and got a job, the sysadmin called me over one day because he was having trouble viewing a folder on the IIS webserver.

It turned out that we'd been hacked and under about seven layers of folders with device names and non-printing ASCII control characters, someone had uploaded a bunch of ripped music CDs and we were getting downloads from all over the planet.

Once I found it, it was easy to remove but we just nuked the machine to be sure.
