I want to make a tiny display from a spare phone screen which connects to my PC over HDMI. Would it be possible to somehow solder an HDMI port to its flat cable? If not, then how would you convert a phone screen into a PC display?

Probably just you need to read up on protocols the screen is using.
I converted my spare tablet into an external monitor, it can be done probably just about any Android device by now through software.
I ended up using a program called Twomon USB, this mirrors through USB and wifi, nearly real-time response and it's genuinely useful as a separate display in this configuration.
There are alternative programs out there for compatibility issues that I went through before settling on Twomon but they were all free to try, most free to use completely.

I know about this method, but for what I want to use it it's not ideal. I want to make a home made VR headset that would directly connect to my PC and act as a 2nd display.
It's possible to stream VR games to a phone with an app called Trinus VR, but you can only play shitty old games otherwise the GPU can't handle it.
ITT: what are drivers

Yes, I have recently learned about drivers, but I'm still not sure if I can just randomly connect any phone display to a driver. I mean the size of the connectors have to mach, and they have to actually be compatible.

a driver is a piece of software, 0/10
Interesting idea. I just bought one of these side-clip things. Going to try it with my laptop for the novelty.

You are the only one thinking that ITT.
