Challenge time: How do you make this not shit without the meme answer of HURR INSTALL X DISTRO/WINBLOWZ XDDD
>>
What don't you like about it?

The unity theme is a bit purple and 3d for me, so I install paper theme and icons. Put a pretty conky thing on the desktop and I'm happy with the appearance. Now I have a stable well supported distro with an active and supportive community.
>>
Thinking about getting back into Linux. Quit shortly after Ubuntu released Unity. I know I'm going to have to fuck around with it to get it working. Which distro has the best support? Still Ubuntu?

Alternatively, any distros "just work" finally?

Ubuntu GNOME is pretty nice

Ubuntu is still the best when it comes to support. You can google most problems and add "Ubuntu" in the search, and find the answer more easily.
>>
Just use the LTS versions and be careful with PPAs. Also, use another DE instead of Unity.
>>
>>59408228
there's nothing wrong with stock ubuntu

You install Ubuntu: MATE. Familiar interface, clean, stable as fuck, easier for older PCs to handle, beginner friendly. It's an all-around good distro.

Just installed elementary OS (it's basically Ubuntu) on an old MacBook. Looks nice and I'm surprised how little I've had to futz with it to get it working.

Xubuntu is the answer

Install LTS server as your base.
Enable HSE.

I'm running lightdm/X/i3 and will probably switch to sway (wayland/i3) just to compare shameful gayme perf.

>Stock
In a lot of ways the regular Ubuntu desktop is 90% of everything you need. I would still recommend HSE or not using LTS but really only 1 computer in the house is experimental. I give telemetry data willingly but disable if you tinfoil.

Xubuntu. Switch the panel to Redmond. Finally stop being a distro hopping autist and enjoy life.
