>>
>>59390318
Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software, and Canonical expressly promotes and recommends nonfree software under the Ubuntu name in some of their distribution channels. Ubuntu offers the option to install only free packages, which means it also offers the option to install nonfree packages too. In addition, the version of Linux, the kernel, included in Ubuntu contains firmware blobs.

The “Ubuntu Software Center” lists proprietary programs and free programs jumbled together. It is hard to tell which ones are free since proprietary programs for download at no charge are labelled “free”.

Ubuntu appears to permit commercial redistribution of exact copies with the trademarks; removal of the trademarks is required only for modified versions. That is an acceptable policy for trademarks. The same page, further down, makes a vague and ominous statement about “Ubuntu patents,” without giving enough details to show whether that constitutes aggression or not.

That page spreads confusion by using the misleading term “intellectual property rights”, which falsely presumes that trademark law and patent law and several other laws belong in one single conceptual framework. Use of that term is harmful, without exception, so after making a reference to someone else's use of the term, we should always reject it. However, that is not a substantive issue about Ubuntu as a GNU/Linux distribution.

I'm not him, but regarding the first two things, I'll let you know that gaming performance is vastly inferior in GNU/Linux. I dual boot Jessie and Windows 7 and the same games have FPS differences of up to 190; all the drivers are fine and even with the minimal settings it's outstanding if a game can get more than 50 FPS on GNU/Linux, but that same game then gets at least over 200 FPS on Windows. The only games where I've found it to be the same are Terraria and Plague Inc., out of the 50ish Steam GNU/Linux games that I own. Bottom line is that drivers and system stuff don't mean shit when the games themselves aren't optimized for GNU/Linux.

I dumped Ubuntu over their data-mining shit as soon as they implemented it and went back to Debian.
The only reason I started using Ubuntu when it came out was because it was just Debian with ndiswrapper and a little GUI ready to easily install wifi drivers and the other proprietary drivers I needed already installed or ready to be.
Been back on Debian as my main desktop OS since, but install everything else on the laptop for fun.
Fuck Canonical, I'd just use Windows if I wanted spyware built into my OS.

>>
>>59398527
>>59398544
But it is bloated. Budgie is literally just Gnome with some custom menus.

The project is immature and the developers are amateurs. You're a retard if you think using an os this new isn't exposing you to security vulnerabilities.

My screencap doesn't work. The system registers that I'm hitting the key and makes a snapshot sound, but nothing seems to be copied and I can't paste it to an image editor. I think it's got something to do with my display drivers, since my system takes longer to bring the display back after sleep than it does to boot up.
>>
>>59398644
Budgie 11 will be coming out Q2 of 2017, and it's based on Qt, not GNOME, so that argument is gonna be invalid pretty soon. Also the project has a solid release and release schedule of snapshot iso's since it's rolling release distro, and the devs aren't amateurs. Ikey himself works on Intel's Clear Linux Project, and the other devs do know what their doing otherwise Solus wouldn't be where it is now.

>>59398666
What are you missing in your repos? I literally have everything I need/want including VS Code. Also I'm pretty sure it's a GNOME bug with custom DE's since Elementary has this same issue, but you can just use the screenshot application itself to take a screenshot. I also used to have this issue with KDE on Arch. That should be fixed when Budgie 11 is released using the Qt framework.

BLOAT. I quite like Unity but it's buggy and heavy and every vanilla Ubuntu past 16.04 has UI quirks that they're not patching because they're planning to dump Unity 7 for 8. For example, Nautilus in 16.10 doesn't work with the top panel, instead just having "Files" like in GNOME. That kind of lack in consistency triggers me and I definitely don't want to wait till 2018 to update.

A couple other GNOME apps have the same issue. Unity 8 is looking pretty sweet, though.

>Elementary
I don't like the userbase and the devs themselves seem to not be nice people. It's just Ubuntu Elementary but they have their heads so far up their asses that they hid their buggy distro behind an annoying paywall for some time. Also, Pantheon is literally just a gimped GNOME.

Fedora is an all around better option than the two.

Does it have a recent version of Geogebra, flacon and soundkonverter or is there a place where I can search their repos? I'm looking to move away from KDE and its overall slowness but anything GTK is kind of sucky and, if I'm gonna use budgie, I might as well do it on Solus.

honestly the stupidest shit ever but can be moved, then its mac os x but not good

I didn't blame Ubuntu, I just think it proved to be much more hassle than it is worth.
I don't have the time nor the energy to work extra just to get things working the way they already do in Windows, why the fuck would anyone do that?

I prefer Mint myself. I jnust prefer Cinnam on, the UI and the menus. 'd take Elementary over Ubuntu if I had to.
>>
>>59409027
Mint is user-friendly but it's security is shit, the main Mint website was once hacked and a false malware-ridden Mint ISO stayed up for a few weeks.
>>
I've tried to run in on several occasions and every single time some massive error occurred that caused my to purge it and go back to windows.

ubuntu is less secure than mac and windows

ubuntu has as much telemetry as windows

ubuntu is not as usable or useful as mac or windows

I don't give a fuck, they should port their games to Linux. Hearthstone is made in Unity and they've built it for android and iOS. They can just as easily export it for Linux.

elementary is bugged for me.
Ubuntu (the GNOME flair) ran fantastically for me for about 4 months before systemd committing seppuku beyond repair.

Currently using Fedora because I'm looking forward to use Wayland with Nvidia proprietary drivers, and I think Fedora will be the first distro to allow that.

Lel, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed also can into wayland now.

Does it work with Nvidia proprietary drivers, though?

Ayup. It made me think about switching to Tubleweed, but i prefer wait to Leap 42.3 release to be sure about Wayland's stability.
Also, i doesn't hate or dislike Fedora, just SUSE have some killer features like yast2 and btrfs by default.

Huh? I'm on my third LTS release, never had problems updating from one to the other at all.
>>
>>59390318
I'm trying to dual-boot it and Win10 but it's making it really fucking difficult for me. It can't even fucking install correctly half the time, now it won't boot and I don't know what to do because this is my first time using a different OS, much less fucking around with boot orders and partitions.

Well, i tried to update from 10.04 to 14.04 and it was terrible. Maybe i just newb, but that expirience make me change Ubuntu to another distro.
>>
>>59390318
Why the fuck would you use Elementary?

If you really want the look and feel of Elementary just install Ubuntu and manually add everything. Elementary is always outdated.
>>
>>59395068
Use Xubuntu then or Lubuntu.
