The "/g/ way" would be to make a custom wallpaper in GIMP. You don't need our permission to install whatever shitware you find web searching. What I do is default to having a full screen mintty/ssh on the second monitor so the wallpaper is rarely seen. This also makes me aware when the thing I'm logged into goes offline.

I have a AMD Radeon graphics card which may be not supported by Ubuntu 16.04.
What should I do? Will upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10 or downgrading to 14.04 solve the issue? If yes, will it work as good as the graphics card works on Windows? Also will have to configure my computer or will the system work perfectly after upgrading or downgrading?

Am I damaging my computer by not using a OS supporting the graphics card?
Also my laptop takes like ~50 seconds to boot? Is that because of the incompatible graphics card?

Appart from being newer, what makes the $1900 MacBook Pro more expensive than the $1550 model?

The cheaper model's specs are better than the more expensive model's. Is the new model only more expensive because of the color display and touchbar?

As a software developer, is there any reason to prefer the more expensive model over the cheaper?

How does RPM fan control work when the fan is connected straight to PSU through MOLEX ?
Also how do splitters from one 4pin header to two 4pin fans work ? Do they get half the power or are they both fully powered ?
>>
>>59383622
It doesn't

The fans draw as much power as they normally would but the tachometer signal only comes from one fan

>>59383344
>>
>>59383675
I assume you're talking about the splitter, so the RPM works only on one fan, or it depends on one fan ? Didn't fully understand
I saw that the higher tier CPU coolers that come with 2 fans, like Noctua, use the splitter, so I would assume, it's not crippling the fans, but I can't find buying one standalone locally, and it's fucking bullshit, now I have one case fan plugged into molex and two fans still sitting in package since I couldn't connect them both to CPU header
>>
Zorin is now top 5 on distrowatch

is it cancer or no?
>>
>>59383756
firmware fan control shouldn't let it damage itself

>>59383777
The tachometer is a signal the computer gets back from the fan so it knows what speed its running. The computer adjusts the PWM control according to this to get the desired speed. If the fans are the same the splitter should run both fans at the same speed, if the fans are different then they could end up running at different speeds

It's seems alright. especially for somebody just coming from Windows or as something to throw on a laptop for fun.
I won't run any of these "based on" distros as a main OS I'm counting on though.
You never know what to expect from somebody's customized version of a main distro, which is why most people wind up on the same handful of main distros like Debian Ubuntu and Arch after hoping around trying everyone's customized layer of stuff thrown on top of them with varying degrees of success.

Am I safe on iOS 9.3.5 or does it have any security flaws? Should I upgrade to iOS 10.2.1?
>>
>>59383988
The array is the problem, not the for loop. The array needs to fit on the stack. The for loop should be able to loop at least 2^64 times, but there is probably no theoretical limit.

I'm looking into the game dev framework pygame for Python. I don't plan to actually make something useful but just to make a couple games as practice.

In C, you write the filename, which is called "....h"
In C++ you may omit the .h and it will automatically add .h or .hpp.
>>59384682
It can be, if you feel comfortable with C++, you can use it for anything.
Python is also used a lot on pi's, because you don't have to compile stuff and that speeds up development.

once the 15 seconds screen timeout time passes
the screen turns off for a second then it turns itself on automatically

-factory reset it twice. issue still present
-I have tried disabling many apps, system apps, force close many apps. it keeps happening.
-started the phone in safe mode. issue is still present even then.
-wiped cache from recovery menu. issue still present

any ideas?
is there any app that would force the screen to stay off until I press the power button?

this command works in terminal cuz I have that file in ~/bin/ which is "on the path" or whatever

arch_update_check.sh

but if I usecrontab like this with some audio playing to test if it gets executed

* * * * * arch_update_check.sh

it wont play

if I set it like this

* * * * * /home/faggot/bin/arch_update_check.sh

then it works

Whats up with that? Why crontab needs full path and how to get around it to write stuff thats more easily portable?

So I'm currently majoring in CS (about 2 yrs in) and I see people who joined after I did, getting internships and invitations to do cool researches with university professors, while I'm here browsing 4chan and stuck in Calculus I.

The thing is, they are all average programmers, I'm way better than them but people just don't acknowledge it, and I have no clue why. I then passed one of our programming classes with the highest grade in the class, and fair enough, the asian dude got invited to do researches while the teachers don't even know my name.

I hate it that actually knowing how to code has nothing to do with the fucking course whatsoever, I had such high expectations and dreams that I would finally be acknowledged for what I'm good at, only to fail at uni because my calculus grades have sunk my average scores below any salvation.

What would you guys do in my place, as I'm sure some of you might've been here before.

I rather not share it here, but it's pretty bad with just some projects I did with friends once in a while. Anyway, I guess you're right. I should try swallowing my pride and building a relationship with them.

When troubleshooting a computer you assembled, at what point do you give up and pay someone to fix it?

I assembled mine late last year and its had nothing but hardware problems that have rendered it inoperable since then. First the PSU goes bad, then the motherboard, now its either the RAM or the CPU or both and I'm back to square one.

On that note, does anyone have a recommendation for a shop that can help? I'm so fed up with trying to fix it myself and I'll pay someone to fix it for me.

Codecademy is very good for gaining basic knowledge, do that. The only hosting service I'm familiar with is Hostinger, it's pretty decent. If you want you website to be simple I'd say go for Hostinger, otherwise do a little googling and I'm sure you'll find a hosting service that'll suite you. When you want to set up your website I suggest you google around and download a template website and tweak it with the html knowledge you gained from Codecademy. After you're done tweaking it and customizing it to your liking you can upload it to the hosting service you've chosen. Remember to check what dns servers your hosting service has so that you can point the domain you bought to them, and that's pretty much it.

Then you don't understand what makes communication software secure. It's inherently super easy to fuck up even when you're using established protocols, an massively worse when you go off the reservation and try to do your own thing. It's a lot easier to throw together a tool that appears to work smoothly and sounds good on paper than one that can actually resist even a moderate level of attack. Most tools that try it without a ton of support and resources end up fucking up really bad, and that is exactly what telegram did. They've made a lot of rookie mistakes, going way beyond the surface problems.

/g/urus, I need some fucking help, I'm probably fucked

Today my PC shut itself down, mobo said the PSU was having power spikes, might be faulty, etc. This happened once after a few hours of being on, I restarted it, and it happened again right after I logged in. I shut it down immediately and went to get a PSU replacement.

After I installed everything again, my 2 HDDs stopped being detected. I triple checked that they're connected to both the PSU and the mobo, even changed the connections and cables and ports, but my 2 HDDs don't show up anywhere, including in the UEFI menu. My SSD was connected through the same cable to the faulty PSU and still works.

Am I fucked for good, can both disks die just like that, even if the mobo shut it down? None of the other hardware got damaged, only both disks. Is there anything I can do to maybe get them to work again? I had some important work on it that I would like to not have go to waste.

pls help /g/
>>
>>59389688
Forgot to add: when I try to power the disks on, it doesn't seem like they're trying to spin at all. There's no vibration coming out of either of them. Could this be a sign that they're actually dead, or is there a way out?

>The best kind of PCB problem to have is a blown Transient Voltage Supressor (TVS) diode, as shown above. According to Seagate’s FAQ, a TVS diode “protects a sensitive circuit by diverting damaging overvoltages and spikes away from the load.” When a spike occurs, the diode blows. Because the diode is no longer functional, the drive won’t power up. Snip the diode off, and the drive will function normally, albeit in an unprotected fashion. Copy your data over to a functional unit, toss the old one, and count yourself lucky.

Depends by what you mean by supported. The card will display 2D graphics and use the CPU for video playback using the Vesa driver. But anything more needs the AMD driver.

Another issue is that Radeon cards suck under Linux. The drivers have been getting better, but they aren't at the same par as the Windows one. Better off with a NVIDIA or maybe Intel card in Linux.

It's not about pride. It's about putting yourself out there, getting them to see you, and having them understand your worth.

It's a little scary. But college is the one of the best places to learn how to do this.

Any shop you take a clone to is just going to rip you off. There's nothing they can do except bang away at for hours, racking up your bill.

Instead, maybe it's the enviro that's causing the issue. It's your PC overheating a lot? Have you measured the temp? Does it get enough airflow?

Maybe you didn't mount the mobo properly and it's getting shorted. What I usually do is take the baggy that came with the mobo and put it between the case and the board. Use a pin to puncture the plastic to let the mounting screws through.

I went through the same shit you did. I was a poorfag though and had to learn the hard way how to fix my shit. Those learned troubleshooting skills lead me to the great career I have now.

How do I download all the full size images from a thread on 4chan?
>>
>>59389241
Exactly. Just stick it through high school. Teachers want you to pass and graduate. If your need help or feel low talk to someone there, a teacher or a counselor. They really do want you to graduate.

Now after you graduate, I'd you want to skip college FOR A WHILE, get as many certs as you can. They'll get you big money quickly, but eventually you'll hit a brick wall as you get older.

Without some shitty degree, you probably won't make management where the easy money is. Check out WGU, it's an online school that gives you college credit for certs, and the classes are all pass/fail and most of them use cert tests for their final. They provide you with official study materials and test vouchers. I ended up finishing my bachelors in two years.

1) if you can actually pull it off, listen to >>59389241

2) if you can't, you may be better off getting certs/etc and working a real job. But chances are you're just a fuckup who can't handle anything at all.

Still depends. Photoshop is lightly threaded and the 8 cores on 1700 won't make much of a difference there, while rendering in Blender should take good advantage of it, but the rest not so much.

Overall, the 1700 is a more capable CPU despite lagging behind the 7700k in single/lightly threaded applications. It'll handle multitasking better and probably increase your rendering performance in Blender by a lot.
But since you mention games as well, 1700 won't push out as many frames as 7700k due to its somewhat limited singlethread performance. Thus, if what you care about the most is being able to push as many fps in your games as possible, the 7700k is the better choice. That's not to say that 1700 delivers a bad experience in games though, it is still perfectly capable of running anything and everything on the market at high framerates.

See this for a bit of Ryzen (gaming) performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-mMBbWHrwM&t=0s although he is using an 1800X in this video, the 1700 and 1700X will both easily reach the same clock speeds. With both X SKUs you're essentially paying more for nothing.
You can look up more reviews and whatnot yourself, personally I'd go for a Ryzen build at this point.

Stupid question here, I was wondering if it's possible to move/copy multiple files at once to multiple folders at once. I have a shitload of porn pics all in one folder, and want to put them in different folders, but I don't want to drag each one individually, I can drag and drop multiple ones of course, but I'm being lazy and would rather have it automated. I don't really care if there in any particular order, but I'd like it if one of each file went into a different folder. Typing all this out, it seems stupid as shit but hey, that's what this thread is for.

Is this a good choice for a storage drive? Is it rational of me to be totally put off by the negative reviews making think it's a high risk? There doesn't seem to be any Hard drives, high capacity ones at least, that don't have a full 5 or even 4.5 star rating.

For some reason, I always weigh the negative reviews like 3 or 4 times heavier than the positive ones. Is this normal? Are all hard drives essentially just a blind crapshoot?

So I've got a ultrabook connected to my TV, and it's basically just a TV box at this point (it stays connected and I just watch videos off it on my TV)

This is fine for me, but it is running Windows 8 and it isnt the most TV-friendly interface.
