Is it really such a big deal when I don't make my functions const correct?
Yes. Const is very very important. You must get it correct.

Nah, it's not important, is less readable and ruins your API when applied to functions.

Correct code shouldn't stop being correct if you take out the const keywords from your functions.
(almost) nobody writes completely correct code on the first try though. Const correctness makes mistakes easier to spot.
