Find someone selling a used 1070 and offer them 250$ for it
480
t. 1060 6gb owner.
I've researched this fro the better part of three hours now. I cannot decide. There is an equal amount of pros and cons for both cards. It seems like the positive remarks regarding the 1060 were far more enthusiastic than the positive remarks for the 480.
I'm confused about something. I saw several comments talk about being "future proof" and that the 480 was better with DX12 than the 1060. I know nothing about that. Also, I've been a Radeon user for many years. I can't complain much about their drivers other than to say that they seem simplistic in comparison to some of the tweakablity comments I've read over the years regarding Nvidia drivers. Perhaps this choice comes down to "future proof" and "better drivers". Any thoughts?
I got a gtx 1060 and I can't be happier. It's incredibly silent and cool I don't even notice it's there, unlike my old r9 380. However, it seems that the rx 480 does have an small fps advantage over the 1060. If temps and sound matter for you, get the nvidia
Rx480 8gb. You can get one (MSI armor OC) for $180 non reference using the jet's new account promo code. It out performs the 1060 and handles DX12 a lot better.

$215 for the RX 480 8GB that performs better
OR
$265 for less performance in a GTX 1060

I read posts where people say, "the 480 gets better fps than the 1060, especially in DX12 games", but then how to explain the findings in this video where the 1060 beats the 480 consistently across the board.

Personally I'd go for the more VRAM
Performance is close on those two GPUs
