Why? What's preventing it? Is evil MS or Apple threatening lawsuits over thumbnails or something?

What's the deal with Linux not having thumbnail view???

Linuxfag here, let me give you the most proper and shameless explanation. I hope you will understand.
>Why are there no thumbnail in file explorer
Because it's written in C. The file chooser widget is written in GTK+, which is one of the most popular C's GUI library. People know about this already.
>Why hasn't this been fixed
As a software developer, I would not touch obsolete POS language such as C, let alone GTK.
For me, it's easier to develop something else rather than fucking with obsolete featureless languagelet like C(ancer). Using C for anything but micro controllers and kernels is pants on head retarded, specially GUI. GUI is MEANT for Object Oriented Programming and C doesn't have that level of sophistication. Developing C is literally a worthless timesink because C does not have anything to offer but timesink: C has no templates, operator overloading, exception handling, type checks, runtime checks, constructors, lazy evaluations, monads and the list goes on. If you are not hacking the very language itself with macros shitting all over the source files you wouldn't trivial things such as get function overloading.
C does not have exception handling. It's meant for 80's computing and the projects that are written in C are unironically stuck in the 80's: like GTK+
Even after you have gone through the agony of using a language that is a disservice to the intelligent programmers (Linus doesn't count, he's on a different level and not everyone is Linus), you have to worry about memory safety.
C is not memory safe. As if the timesink development was not enough pain, you have to test your program for possible security vulnerability. When K&R came up with C, it was an ancient time. C's priority was being able to produce binaries that can run in an 800MHz processor with 64MiB RAM that can fit into floppies. Security was NOT a concern.

Coincidentally, KDE file chooser has thumbnails and guess what language it's written at: it's C++.

Ban C

Not only do you need to install full KDE system but the applications themselves have to support KDE file picker. Firefox does support it but all the other GTK apps don't. So you're back to square one.

>>59373261

>>59373363
You're obviously blind. It has thumbnails. Thumbnails = miniature images, which you can clearly see and you also have an image preview while selecting.
A list display is better than tiles anyway so I don't see a problem in Ubuntu's file picker. It feels much better than any other.

more pasta, don't mind me.

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

Whether you use KDE has nothing to do with what other Linux sofware you can use. You have yet to name any actual problem. Also, there are plenty of people who use KDE. There are entire distros based on it like OpenSUSE (which is based on SUSE, an enterprise Linux distro) and Chakra (an Arch Linux fork).
If you are going to pick your DE based on what Canonical or Debian have as their default then I don't think Linux is even right for you to be honest. Just go back to OSX.

Some of them do. Kdenlive, digikam, krita or any other that can call the kde's file picker. If you install a patched version of gtk 2 you can have the icon view on any of the programs that can cal the gtk2 file picker. But to be strict as you said, those programs doesn't implement any file picker by themselves, the file picker depends on the library used to create the program. You're welcome.

Do you have some data to backup this claim? The most recent one i found (a bit old tho) seems to indicate KDE is pretty popular:

>>59374119
>prob is that the # of ppl who use KDE is tiny
See the link.
>and software library is tiny.
>t. i don't know what i'm talking about.
But seriously, at least check this first:
https://www.kde.org/applications/
https://www.archlinux.org/groups/x86_64/kde-applications/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_KDE_applications

And this doesn't includes the frameworks or all the qt programs out there, just the applications under the KDE umbrella. If you want to check qt applications on linux, while not all of them uses the kde dialog a lot of them does it in my own experience:
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=List_of_Qt_Applications

Also there's non-Qt applications that has integration with KDE and can call the file picker, Libreoffice, chrome or vivaldi are examples of this.
>>
>>59374210
Chromium and other browsers based on it like vivaldi calls the KDE dialog by default if it detects you're on kde.

As a note, the Qt dialog is not the KDE dialog. The Qt file picker dialog is a very simple one with almost no features by itself but Qt5 can detect the target environment and use an appropriate file picker using the default one as a fallback only or if you tell it to use it.

>>59374404
>>59374445
Yeah, while i consider gnome to be a pretty polished and integrated environment by itself i alfo find pretty nasty how they often removes functionality, refuses to implement sough after features like this one or how they has been breaking compatibility with different options for customization each stable release. I think they want to push forcefully their vision on their users.

I'm the opposite. I find tabs in the file explorer to be an extremely basic but comfy and important piece of functionality that windows lacks by default. Not having thumbnails on the file picker is shitty but is not a deal breaker, as some pointed if finding a file without thumbnails is complicated it can usually be dragged from the file explorer. Each time i wanna work with more than one directory on windows i just remember why i started to use linux tho.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59371804
Historically communism probably killed more jews than anyone else.

That said...

Open a folder in your fave file manager. Look at all the nice thumbnails and then copy the path(s)of the file. Paste that path into 'location box' at the top of the 'select file' window in your browser. If the location box is not there then click on a location at the left and it'll appear at the top of the 'select file' window. It's actually pretty easy and not having to use windows on the internet is the best part. Toodles.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

Again, it's 2017 and there are better alternatives already. Take Rust for example. It's fully memory safe. It compiles down to exactly the same code to which your C would. It has no runtime. It's trivial to call C code from it (there is even an automatic binding generator which supports a subset of C++). It's also trivial to call Rust code from C, Python, Haskell, or any other language. It has an awesome package manager. It supports effortless cross compilation to ARM and other architectures. It supports modern language constructs like first class functions, closures, generics, sum types, pattern matching, hygienic macros, monadic error handling, etc. It has actual first class support for Unicode and a built-in UTF-8 string type. It has unit testing integrated into the language. It has a bulit-in Doxygen-like automatic documentation generator (for example see regex crate docs). It even automatically tests code snippets from your documentation to ensure that they still work!
Do you see any advantages that C has here, besides support for niche platforms with proprietary C compilers? Because I don't. It's 2017 and we should stop using C in new projects when there are better (in every sense of the word) alternatives available, especially in contexts where security is of paramount importance!
If you don't like Rust there is also D, or even C++ if you insist on using something from the C family, or a few other niche languages, all of which will be vastly better than C for a project like this one.
