What sort of computer? On my laptop I once fucked up grub so it took four times longer to boot because it decided to draw the menu slow as fuck every time, does it do that for you too? When done right it takes around 10-12 secs for me before it's good to go (well, until it decided to be a massive bitch and only boot when it felt like it because I bought lenovo, but that's beside the point since it happens before the OS is loaded)

OP here, my main theory is that Windows heavy caches frequently used programs and files in RAM (I have 12 GB of RAM so there's plenty of room for that) in a way Linux doesn't do (despite it's a thing all modern OSes do, or should do). Windows feels very, very snappy on this machine to be honest, despite the fact it's a shitty 600€ Lenovo laptop with a 5200rpm hard disk. Also the laggy scrolling could be a thing of the graphics drivers.

Not wanting to start a shitty OS war thread, but Linux was significantly slower than W10 for me. I haven't deleted the Linux partition but I don't see myself switching full time anytime soon.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
Linux is for hipsters because they want to avoid being mainstream with no games or good software.
>>
>>59362438
Windows 10 takes full advantage of modern hardware to cache everything, and the entire UI is hardware accelerated. Linux is slow as fuck because it's still basically stuck in the mid-90's.in terms of how it treats hardware.
>>
>>59362498
openSUSE boots very slow. But this isn't a problem since you should only shut down your PC for updates.
>>
OP: Linux should boot faster than windows, make sure you dont let Win 10 trick boot but do a full cold boot or also let linux unsuspend from RAM or SSD.

>>59364013
No, Linux is ahead on most hardware.

Which is why big enterprises use it to throw around a hundred thousand containerized VM instances of it and stuff like that.
>>
>>59364074
That has nothing to do with how a desktop user experiences Linux.
>>
My untweaked Linux takes 5.61s kernel + 4.79s userspace. Cold boot, of course. And it does start a bunch of extra things.

So what if I want to use unity, photoshop, premiere, and actually test what I make? Is it still bad to use windows? What if I have 5 monitors, two graphics cards and eight hard drives?

I don't actually know if the second half of that matters, when it comes to linux.

Is there any functional alternative that is actually comparable to the adobe suite yet? Serious question here, I honestly want off this ride. I know unity sort of functions on Ubuntu.

Tried that the first day it was out. Litterally windows movie maker with heavy emphasis on color grading and the most retarded gpu acceleration I've ever seen. The macbook pro with retina display does not have this problem.

the sole reason to even boot into windows in 2017 is to play some StarCitizen or Conan Exiles.

eventually when they make a linux version i can get rid of this piece of shit

It's that. You open the video editing view.

But you'll still need a few tutorials if you never used Blender:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pe_u8zd2e0

Because after the basics you also have things like render/effects pipelines (IIRC that wasn't the proper Blender terminology, but I hope you get what you mean if you watch the video), which you can use to, say, stabilize video, among many other things:

pls reply to ques
>>
>>59365465
That's 100% because Linux decided to overwrite it when you setup dual boot and had no intention of ever fixing it because they never developed the capability to restore it.

>>59365429
I am not sure about Linux but the Windows code base is surely filthier than a designated shitting street.

> Linux for working and everything else

did you every try to code under windows? it's beyond retarded.
/thread

You always have to install Windows first, because it fucking rapes every bootmanagement and overwrites everything in the manner "i'm the only OS here". Installing linux afterwards posed NEVER a problem in my whole fucking life, you automatically get the option to boot into any OS at the start.

Where are you guys even getting your information from? it's beyond retarded in this "technology" forum. holy fucking shit have i never seen more technologically retarded kids in one place in my life and i was on multiple huge LANs

so let me clarify it for you dear OP
loonix taps into the psychic brain power of the user, since most long term lunix are enlightened humans who managed to tap into the psychic web universe, making mental sex with aliens of the past, they bridge the gap between the computer and the almighty power of the psychic hive mind, therefor being faster than windows...
conclusion:

Install Gentoo or even arch.
>boot faster than Windows 10
>opening programs faster
>fast serfing
>fast scrolling
>resuming from sleep in 0.4 seconds.
You don't even can prove what you said.

laptop = mobile computer
the radeon isn't that bad but because its a mobile version it may be leashed (all graphic cards manufactures do this)
Radeon it self works well on linux, I have a R7 and works pretty well on my desktop,
and unlike nvidia, they should work out of the box with open-source drivers

It's no surprise. Windows outperforms Linux in every real world desktop usage test.

If the electric car had been focused on for the last 100 years instead of combustion engines, we would have electric cars with far more range and power than gas.

But that doesn't change the fact that gas cars are faster and have more range than electric cars.

Just like software developers have focused on Windows for the past few decades instead of Linux.

Hi Pajeet, how are things in pooland today?

One poo has been deposited into your loo.

Reminder to myself why i'm never going to install Ubuntu ever again:

- Removing dock cable without suspendig freezes the laptop, and sometimes fucks up my system files as a result.
- Laptop does not detect ethernet network when docking while the system is running, you need to be suspended or restart after docking.
- My Thinkpad 13 speakers makes a loud *pop* each time a sound is played, possibly due to some kernel power savings that i have yet to discover.
- Getting my Bose QC35 bluetooth headphones to work with Ubuntu is straight up masochistic.
- We're in 2017 now, and it is still a pain in the ass to get audio through HDMI with a intel iGPU and different monitors. I don't give a shit about the 15+ audio outputs my sound card can handle, make that garbage pulseaudio automatic and simpler to use.
- It's much better as a VM guest. VirtualBox can run Ubuntu full screen and in seamless mode, and i get the benefit to use a isolated OS purely for programming increasing my productivity.
