Laptops from 2007 onwards all supported USB boot unless you bought some off-brand garbage

MacBook from 2008. Can't handle standard USB booting, only USB drives containing an OS X installation work.

Are you certain? Sometimes it's not so obvious, as you manually need to set settings in bios like legacy USB and boot order.

I do network engineering, but I'm forced to do helpdesk/desktop support when the helpdesk team is unavailable.
I always bring an optical unit, since booting from USB never ever fucking works.
No don't tell me about "try this different utility", or try this or try that, since booting from USB always fails miserably.
