The software is free as in beer and freedom.

You are paying for someone who is letting you use his server(s), bandwidth and took the time to configure the whole thing.

"Open Source" is a development model
"Free Software" is an actual movement about software freedom

While Open Source is marketing oriented, Free software is all about software being free as in freedom. Both, Open Source and Free Software don't imply that software must be gratis.
