Why did telecommunication develop so slowly?
The oldest and simplest form of telecommunication over moderate and long distances is optical telegraphy using flags,semaphores,torches etc.

It's weird as fuck that there doesn't seem to be any reliable records of such technologies being used between the end of antiquity and the last quarter of the 18th century.
