The second is the perfect solution. Firstly, it doesn't require GUI to be loaded in memory in order to turn the device off, secondly, it can be automated by a shell script. One more thing, there can be written a simple GUI wrapper to do this shit with a mouse.

Maybe the bullshit.so you copied over had some of its own dependencies that you did not also copy over, in which case it doesn't matter what operating system you're using it wouldn't have worked until you copied the dependencies over as well.

oh it's perfectly understandable. So App X and App Y both have their .so and man pages randomly mixed across the entire filesystem in some pattern.

Had you actually used Linux anytime in the past ten years or so, you'd know that you hardly ever need to use CLI if you really don't want to. That's not true at all. My main OS is Windows. I use Linux all the time as an internet browsing sandbox. The amount of headache I had to go through just to get it browsing the web normally was retarded.
>>
>>59352596
It's probably your miserable experience. Experienced Gentoomen don't wait a compilation process, they can compile in background, pajeets can't manage their time. 3 hours is an inadequate exaggerated time estimate for a text editor
>>
>>59352688
Amazing. Because for me web browsing has worked out of the box every time I've tried.
>>
>>59352632

>>
>>59352646
Linux is an OS for multiple users, unlike Windows, which usually runs on PCs. Imagine 20 people being logged into Linux at the same time. OS must be protected from DLL hijacking in one way or another.
>>
>>59352642
>memorizing directories
The whole point of the directory structure in Linux is that you don't have to memorize that shit, because everything is in its place.

Valid reasons to be mad though:
pulseaudio: Never fucking works
xorg: old and buggy. Will take ages before wayland is usable
gtk3: breaks theming with every update
dconf: Let's copy one of the worst elements of Windows and only make it slightly more bearable
I could go on.

All symlinks to /bin these days, but yeah that sucked. I read that unix devs back in the day actually did this, because their hard drive got full, so they created /sbin for static binaries on a new drive, but that lost all meaning when dynamic binaries ended up there.
>>

>>
>>59352800
Yes, Windows was made as a single user OS with no networking. Both these things got tacked on later. You can actually still see the remains of some stolen unixoid network stack in Windows. hosts for example is in:
%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Multi user functionality in Windows is still kind of broken. runas.exe is not as mature as su or sudo.

Then again Unix was made as a single user OS, but had multi user support added early in its life.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>Yeah send those "open documents" to your boss or professor see how well that goes over. When they bitch just go into your turbo autism mode about proprietary software

No need to be hostile famicom. Depends on your needs but the differences are not LO fault. ODF is well documented and is an ISO standard. OOXML is supposed to be an ISO standard but unfortunately the program that creates +98% of OOXML documents doesn't honors that standard and uses a proprietary variable. Standards are supposed to provide compatibility among competing solutions but due to the OOXML variant used by MSO needing to be reverse engineered this makes the ISO certification moot. In fact there's info about OOXML being pushed just as a PR move done under shady circumstances.
http://noooxml.wikidot.com/open:rejectooxmlnow

I'm not sure about your requirements but in general:
- Use libreoffice and save your documents in ODF if you want to be always the owner of those documents and never depend on one entity. IF you need to share that document and it'll not be edited by other people use PDF.
- For documents that needs to be edited by more than one person i recommend online solutions like google docs. Honestly, unless you definitely need a feature only available on MSO, google docs is much nicer for working collaboratively.
- If you need to deal with Microsoft formats and you don't want to use their products you can check onlyoffice or WPS office.
- If you don't mind to use microsoft products but you don't like windows you can run MS office 2007 or 2010 on wine. I think you can run MSO 2013 with a recent version of crossver but i'm not sure about wine.

In 95% of the cases i'm well covered by libreoffice and google docs.

You must be doing some weird formatting thing. I used to obsessively open all my documents in Word in a VM to ensure compatibility but I eventually stopped because they were always fine. The only time I've ever seen a problem is when I open some strangely formatted docx file sent to my by someone else, and even then the only issue is that the formatting gets messed up. I've had this happen maybe 4 times and I now I no longer work in a shitty position where people send me .docx files in the first place.

Nah, /sbin is for superuser binaries, such as fdisk. /sbin wouldn't need to be in a regular user's PATH.

Also /bin was for binaries that would be needed during boot, and /usr/bin could be mounted on another partition or drive for stuff that wasn't needed until runtime for userspace stuff.

I an not a clever man, but I do know this:

When I SSH into a freshly provisioned Ubuntu 16.04 machine as user X, it doesn't matter if my coworker is already logged in to that server as user X or user Y. My session works and his session works and there are no conflicts.

When I remote into a freshly provisioned Windows 10 machine that is on our domain and as domain user X, it terminates whatever existing session is running (local or remote, same user or different) and exits to the login screen in order to start my session. Cherry on top: if the WiFi connection depends on user credentials, this handover drops the WiFi connection, which then of course aborts the attempted remote session. Yes, there are ways to get around this. All I've seen so far look supremely hacky or come with their own drawbacks.

No you fuck off. Dude's story meshes with my experience. I think I fubar'd xorg on my Ubuntu system two or three times when I was inexperienced and trying to get my optimus enabled laptop GPU working and ended up reinstalling to fix it. Admittedly this was 12.04 - 14.04 days and the ecosystem around this was changing rapidly (bumblebee? jenkins? primus? For a while there was a native nvidia tool that you needed to use, then it was deprecated. Then Jenkins got folded into bumblebee I think. I needed the most recent proprietary drivers because nvidia had just introduced underclocking for my card on Linux and because of a firmware bug the card bsoded at normal clocks. Coolbits 8 in my xorg.conf to enable it maybe? Etc etc etc).

Someone experienced could probably have fixed my issues with no reinatalls, and furthermore there might not have been a problem if I had stumbled on the right guides. But what good does it do to shout that someone is lying because noob them didn't follow the guide you think is obvious?

In any case, I've learned a lot since then, use arch as my daily driver now, and swear at windows daily at work for being awkward in various ways. I love Linux, but I crashed my windows machines pretty regularly for my first couple of years on computers and my first couple of years on Linux were pretty similar.

I was a big Linux fan initially too ("all that freedom! wow I didnt even know that there is such a thing as a window manager! wow you can switch out a file manager? that's insane!")

But at the end of the day, Linux infuriates me waaaaay more than Windows. Just tons of autistic decisions that the Linux and GNU devs made. There must be hundreds of these micro frustrations with Linux, I didnt remember all of them in this thread.
For example the fact that Linux wont autocomplete an executable for chmod +x until it's already chmodded as executable. Oh sure, it "makes sense". But it's fucking stupid. Just let me autocomplete it. U s a b i l i t y
It starts with shit like this and it ends with the fact that I dont get a graphical desktop on my server by default that I can just drag & drop my files to. Oh no, I have to ssh into it manually and do all this crap on the cmdline.
I can go on for hours. Oh sure, all of these decisions have justifications. Autistic justifications.
>>
>>59354637
Thanks for your shilling, pajeet.
>>
>>59353404
Because it is like removing the registry. So much shit has to be configured around it that although you technically can remove it, it would be a massive pain in the dick compared with just using a distro that doesn't roll it in the first place. systemd controls an insane amount of stuff that used to be delegated to a bunch of individual programs and packages that all had to be individually configured, and if you want to remove systemd you're going to be configuring all that shit yourself.
>>
>>59354637
Auto complete for chmod+x works for me. Also why would you want a graphical desktop by default on a server? Jesus at least bait better. Just install one and startx manually for when you need a GUI for some reason
>>
>>59354637
Are you stupid or something? Why would you want a graphical desktop by default on a server? If you want graphical file management just use FTP, literally everything else is better managed through a shell.
>>
>>59354637
>I dont get a graphical desktop on my server by default that I can just drag & drop my files to. Oh no, I have to ssh into it manually and do all this crap on the cmdline.
Usually you'd have a headless server and copy files from a client. Mount the location with whatever protocol you want (yes, you can do it with ssh as well) and copy however you like. That includes graphical file managers and drag and drop.
>>
>Linux hate thread

I hate that the Linux Foundation tries to sell their proprietary-friendly Open Source shit as "Freedom" and quotes RMS' four freedoms on their website, without mentioning GNU, but with shilling stuff like skype on other pages.

These people use Freedom to sell their crap just when it's convenient, but in reality, Linus gives a shit about freedom and actually can't stand the FSF.
>>
>>59354637
>I dont get a graphical desktop on my server by default
Great idea, lets make sure you can't run a server unless you have a GPU and at least 1 GB of RAM. If you need a graphical desktop on a server, you probably shouldn't be running one in the first place, at least not without someone who can hold your hand.

You're getting a lot of shit for this, but I do understand. It takes me longer to figure out the correct scp or rsync or pipe-to-ssh command than it does for me to double click a file in filezilla or mobaxterm (an amazing program btw).

But on the other hand, once you do figure out the command, it's more powerful and precise and repeatable. The other day I wrote a bash oneliner that pulled a bunch of data from a mysql database behind django, compressed it, piped it to another server via ssh, piped it into a running docker container on that server, uncompressed it, and saved it into the mongodb database in that container. I can save this as a script and add it to a dockerfile or vagrantfile and dev who spins up a local development instance of the system using that mongodb database will have up+to-date test data automatically.

>>

That's just straight up not true for nvidia cards. Their proprietary driver has first class linux support (mostly due to cuda shit but works for games too), while their foss driver often times doesn't support basic shit like changing the clock speed (not their fault nvidia has been total dicks to them). For AMD, it's hit or miss depending on what features you need, but they're shifting development over to the foss stack anyway. Intel graphics don't even have a proprietary driver.
