A lot of libre software is shit. The fact that so many developers refuse to move to a modern UI toolkit is pretty telling as well. Since high PPI is a requirement of mine that means Linux and Windows are less than ideal.

It's a result of being non-free. OS is targeted to satisfy as many people as possible, so you can't be satisfied with it fully, because of something is present in it that you don't like and something missing that you like. You can't configure it in a way you want, it's literally a brick. Yoy have no power over it, like in linux (except some hacking that is not oficially documented or supported), the OS controls you, not you control the OS. Itunes can remove your pirated music and you can't remove itunes, as an example.
Also many things (at least in programming) just don't werk and you have to pay literally for every simple shit like djvu reader.

If people donated to free software as much as they payed to corporations, it would have the same quality now. Actually many free software IS better then non-free (linux, kde, almost any browser). Being libre or proprietary does not affect shittyness. The quality of any product improves when you donate to it's developers.

At the time, a 5k display from Dell cost $1500. That leaves me with $500 to work with. The cheapest GPU I saw that could output 5k was $150. An i5 6500 was (is?) around $200. An nvme SSD costs like $200 even now. That already puts me over $2000 without even looking at things like the case, the motherboard, the Apple trackpad, etc.

That monitor didn't exist when I bought this computer. The only two displays that were 5k were the iMac and the Dell 5k display. Both were $1500 starting.

The latest 2015 5k iMac has a 6700K for the mid-top range.

It has a perfectly fast m.2 SSD that's faster than anything available on most Winshit machines.

The only downside to Apple sometimes is the GPUs, but they focus on compute power and Thunderbolt port availability, hence why they keep going to AMD.

Apple puts TDP as a priority sometimes, but it makes sense, they are not gayming machines.
