Do you have it synced to iTunes? Which version? iOS 9 requires (I think) iTunes 12. However if you're running iTunes 11, perhaps because you have an old computer, it will still offer to upgrade you to iOS9. But after doing so will tell you to upgrade to iTunes12.
I've been keeping my parents iPad2 on iOS8 because it's synced to a Snow Leopard Mac which will only run iTunes 11 … I have my old iPad4 sitting around that I want to migrate them to, but can't since it won't sync with that Mac.

iOS9 seemed to work ok on another iPad2 I had, but I literally only used it for a week and hadn't loaded it down with apps. Long story short, I bought an iPad that turned out to be stolen.
Located the owner. Arranged to meet. But she stopped responding. Luckily it wasn't iCloud locked, but to get around the passcode I had to restore it which upgraded the os. Doodled with it for a week then sold it.

Or is iOS10 supported on the 2? In which case I really don't know.

I mostly use it to watch youtube videos, reading books and comics, the metallic hadnle that goes on bedside is maximun comfy.

I don't use iTunes at all. I use my iPad as a standalone device, exclusively for YouTube and to read PDF's. But this is mostly because Safari and every other app is too slow and crashes a lot.
