Going full SSD on a desktop PC is worthless, you're not going to notice any difference in performance as long as you have your OS on the SSD unless you do things that does lots of read/writes to the hard drives. Video games is not one of those things. I have a 500 GB SSD in my laptop though.

>or are you still clinging to those old ass HDDs
Magnetic storage is superior to flash media for archival purposes. If you leave an SSD unpowered for a couple years, the electrons will leak from the gates and corrupt data. The time this takes decreases with wear, and an SSD w/ many writes can shit itself withing a couple weeks unpowered - pic related. This means if you have a 1TB SSD filled with data you wish to save, you'll need to move it to magnetic storage regardless. So might as well skip the waste of time and money, and go straight for the HDD.
With that said, whenever I'm IO limited, it's always an HDD, which is annoying.
>>
>>59338956
I have 17tb, all on HDDs. Far too expensive (and very little benefit) to put all that on SSDs. Might get an SSD eventually just for the OS when prices drop enough, but I'd sooner get tape than significant SSD storage.

Going all ssd is still too pricey, but my main drive is a 1TB ssd. Still have 2x 4TB hdds for data storage and backup though.

For anybody with under 1TB of data all ssd is pretty easy though.

SSD in all machines as the system drive, HDDs (mostly external) as data storage
>>

>For anybody with under 1TB of data all ssd is pretty easy though.

I'm very autistic with storage management, had this 500gb HDD for 5 years now and never used more than 100gb or so. Never install more than 2 games and keep superfluous stuff on my external HDD.
>>
>>59338956
yea , since my HDD was gone into oblivion with the fucking SMART errors.

That being said buying a SSD in eastern europe makes you consider suicide after the fact

I still have HDDs on my RAID SAS, but otherwise everything is SSD since '14.

I don't have very much storage outside of the SAS anyway, so this is not much of a hurdle.
>>
>>59339099
>For anybody with under 1TB of data all ssd is pretty easy though.
>1TB HDD: $50
>1TB SSD: $250
Putting that extra $200 into CPU or GPU can make a massive difference, probably worth a lot more than loading times on a low/medium budget system
>>
>>59339186

I only download hentai shit (only pictures, movies go straight to the external HDD) , but even so, I still delete folders I haven't been fapping to for some time so I can save some space.

Flash functions better at a higher active temperature, while at the same time, stores better at a lower power-off temperature. The lower the active temp, and the higher the power-off temp, the shorter the unpowered memory cell integrity.
That pic is from a manufacturer, and each cell is given in a period of weeks. For example as per the table, an active temp of 25 C and a power-off temp of 55 C will only guarantee cell integrity for 1 single week. Of course that's a worst-case range of temperatures, but wear makes cells more susceptible to electron leakage. This applies to all flash storage.
Important to note is manufactures don't put this information on their packaging for consumer SSDs - they want to sell SSDs as a direct upgrade to HDDs, when in fact that is not the case.

I'm looking for SSDs for a laptop but almost all of them use TLC NAND. I want MLC because >muh write cycles
Are MLC drives still being made? Can someone suggest a model or two? (240-512GB is what I'm looking for).
>>
>>59338956
>Have you gone full SSD yet?
No. The only things that warrants being on an SSD are games.
I have more than just games.
>>
>>59338956
thing is im using HDD raids since forever.
I was using also a single kingston shitty ssd as boot.
I brought a new NVM SSD, man that shit is awesome, but the most disturbing thing was when i used ATTO to read the speeds.

NVM of course topped all things, hitting 2000mb/sec.
The nice discovery was that my HDD raid 0 was doing around 500mb/s while the shitty kingston SSD was doing 300mb/s.
Since then im keeping all non critical speed data on HDD raid and the OS on NVM.
Having the OS on the nvm is incredible, everything is fucking smoother.

>>
I have two 525gb SSDs for storage and a 256gb boot SSD exclusively for windows, programs and browsers.
>>
Bought my first one a few years ago, 120gb 830 evo. Then got a good price on the 250gb 850 series a while back (I work in a computer shop) and bought 2 of em, running them in raid 0 for os+games, using the 120gb for documents a pictures.
I have a 3tb hdd for downloads & music, and a a bunch of older 500gb & 640gb drives laying around that I use for backups.
>>

>>
>>59338956
If SSDs had price parity with HDDs, I'd immediately start replacing all my drives with SSDs.

Unfortunately, they aren't, so I'm still stuck with boot partition on SSD and everything else on HDDs. I'm thinking of getting another drive, a half tb SSD to use as game + utility drive, next to the boot drive.

I'd need to rearrange quite a lot of the data on the drives, but that's just the equivalent of a spring cleaning.

It's not like I deal with much data anyway.
>>
>>59339754
>muh write cycles
The controller firmware will probably fuck something up before you even begin to see the first dead memory cell.
But yes, MLC SSDs are still being made. Samsung PRO series use MLC V-NAND, while their EVO series (higher density, up to 4TB and cheaper) use TLC V-NAND.
>>
>>59339923
fucking retarded
>>
For your os drive SSD makes sense. For storage of data/programs or server work drives HDD hands down. But if your current os drive is an hdd just wait till it dies (might take a while, desktop has an 160GB WD that's maybe 4+yrs old and still going) then replace with an ssd.
>>
>>59338956
When 2TB of SSD storage gets below $100 I'll consider it. As of now, there's no reason to get an SSD other than fast boot times and faster loading of games that don't require an internet connection.
>>
>>59339330
Hybrid drives get terrible read/writes if moving large files over.
>>
>>59340333

games like Skyrim or Fallout that you can add a lots of mods really shine with a SSD
>>
>>59340367
That's why I said games that don't require an internet connection. Games that load huge maps like skyrim will benefit while games like csgo will load fast but still be limited to server connections.

Currently using a 256GB NVMe Samsung 950 PRO. That thing is really fast. Win10 booting and shutting down in 4-5 seconds is comfy as fuck.

2TB Caviar Black for storage. Just werks.
>>
>>59338956
>are you still clinging to those old ass HDDs?
Yes, in fact I am. I reckon that I can just as well spend that extra money that SSDs cost on RAM instead and have all the same effect through a larger block cache.

>but muh boot times
Current uptime: 409 days
>>
>>59340133
That's a valid reason. PCs are expensive and having cheap storage means more cash towards a cpu/gpu/psu.
>>
>>59340422
