I just got word that Canadians will FINALLY get Nougat on the S7s on March 20. If they're on Rogers.

There has been no word from other carriers other than "we should all be getting the update at the same time", and radio fucking silence for those of us who bought an S7 outright from a Samsung store.

On top of that, we're gonna be getting 7.0 instead of 7.1. I'm still on the fucking November security patch for Christ's sake. ON A FACTORY UNLOCKED FLAGSHIP. It's not like Samsung have a Note 7 to worry about supporting anymore either. On top of that, apparently all those who already have official Nougat are complaining that battery consumption has gotten worse.

So this leaves me with having to use ROMs from Pajeet to stay updated, which have gotten more hit-and-miss in the past two years.

I fell for the meme. Don't you bastards do the same. If you want steady updates go for the Pixel, or a OnePlus phone if you're poor.

Hey,

complete smartphone-noob here.

I'm looking for a basic smartphone under $200€ (roughly the same atm) that allows me the following:

- mobile Internet
- occasionally using it for the GPS function
- WhatsApp
- browsing the internet every now and then while I'm commuting or don't have anything else to do while not at home
- watch youtube-vids occasionally

So far I've found the Lenovo Moto G4 to have everything I need, but maybe there are even cheaper/better alternatives?

Also, what kind of data plan would I need for my occasional internet usage?
As I said, I really don't use it that much. A handful of short phone calls per week, a bit of 4chan browsing and WhatsApp is all I'm going to use it for.

Would appreciate if somebody could give me a few pointers here.

Cheers.

There is a 1.5gb/month plan available for 10€ that I have been looking at, would that cover an hour of browsing and maybe 10 minutes of youtube per day?

Might be an asinine question, but that kind of stuff is really hard to even remotely estimate for somebody who only used prepaid so far and never bothered with mobile internet before.

Moto G5
>smaller size (5" vs 5.5")
>better build (metal, instead of plastic used on G4)
>removable battery
>fingerprint reader
>slightly less powerful

Too early to say if the camera has been improved compared to the Moto G4. Not that huge of a difference, comes down to what size phone you prefer.

Don't think 1.5gb/month will be enough with that use, 10 minutes of youtube is around 100mb.
>>
>>59349198
Don't buy Sony, the build quality will be shit.

Blackberry will be shit too as Priv had a pretty good SoC but the phone was hella slow due to blackberry software bloat.

>>
>>59349379

I've had a Sony Z2 since release, it has survived a lot and not a single crack. Best quality phone I've ever had.

The thing that is pretty negative with the BB is the screen and slow CPU and GPU compared to Sony and Samsung.
Also it's missing APTX which I kinda need.

>>
>>59349379
How come almost none of my Sony friends have cracked screens, while most of my Samsung friends have cracked screens and flaky plastic backs?
>>
>>59349431
Is it that bad?

I found the Galaxy S1-S6 to be terrible quality, while Z1 and Z2 was super quality, but now its the other way around?

S7 is good while Z5 is crap?
>>
>>59349444
Your Samsung friends are less careful?

I'm not talking about the phone falling and cracking, I'm talking about the screens cracking by themselves out of nowhere.

Also most premium phones nowadays are trading resilience for glass and shit, so don't expect anything to be as resistant as your Z2 or S2 or whatever.
>>

Why aren't you using sultan CM13 or LOS14? OxygenOS for OPO isn't being updated anymore
>>
>>59352109
yeah I've been looking at it, and its highly recommended. Ultimatly the OnePlus One is pretty good for me, anything more powerful than that or with more features is just a plus. At this point my issue is "how much is too much" for it when i'm in a bidding war on ebay
I've lost one and skipped two others so far because I wasnt willing to go over $125 the first time and $150 the other two times.
Like I said the ones I'm looking at now are over $150 but come with screen protectors and cases, or I can fork out $200 for a seller refurbished one. Or upgrade to the OP2 for $219 use
Obviously $200 or more is not ideal and I'd rather stay under that
>>
>>59352011
If you want good custom ROM support and are fine with chink phones I'd recommend the Redmi Note 3 Pro or Mi5. ZUK Z2 also has great specs for the price but custom ROM support isn't as good.
>>
>>59352199
Honestly once i have the phone set up i'll only use it for quick look ups and how to's online, taking pictures, texting, and phone calls. I'll also be using it for a few games here and there. Rooting is possible if i bother, but unlikely.
I've looked at the Moto G because its only $100 for amazon prime members, but the screen is smaller than I'd like, only 2gb of ram, and smaller battery.
The Redmi Note 3 is only $179 on gearbeast, which is appealing obviously, does it have advantages over the OPOs that i've been looking at? Other than keeping me from pulling my hair out over missing a bid by seconds.

As long as it covers what i mentioned above and equals or exceeds what i can get out of a OnePlus One at a similar price range, I'd be content. Weight isnt a big deal, but i am a fan of heavier phones, 5.5" screen is preferred.
As it stands now the Redmi Note 3pro, and OnePlus One/Two are the phones I'm looking at
I checked with Willmyphonework and all of them are listed as "Device is compatible with some of the network carriers frequencies. It may work." though chinese model versions wont get 4g.
I was considering the K6000 but it will only work on 2g. Nevermind that.

Another dude with an Honor 8 here.

It's a great phone and I get nothing but compliments on it (black).

I had a Nexus 5 and a Sony Xperia Z5C and within 2 months of owning both, I would get homescreen redraws. Along with the redraws I'd get weird glitches in the screen like the button to expand volume controls would disappear.

Hasn't happened once on my Honor 8 and I've been using it for the past 4 months.
>>
>>59353848
Honor 8 owner here, I love everything about the phone EXCEPT the lack of dev community.

Seriously, they fucking partnered with XDA and we have all of two ROMS, both of which have no working cameras.

They need to release more source code for the Kirin 950 so we can get some ROMS out. I want my LineageOS

Thinking about getting an Honor 8 or a OnePlus 3T. Is the camera on the OP3T noticeably better and are the dual cameras on the Honor 8 just a gimmick? I'd like to take decent photos when traveling without bringing a separate camera.
>>
>>59353893
That's what is really bothering me with Chink phones lately.
They have an amazing bang for the buck spec-wise, but their software if either filled with malware or simply unusable. Then you turn to custom ROMs (if you were smart enough to buy a Snapdragon phone) and you realize every ROM sucks and suffers from random reboots and camera problems.

Even hugely popular phones like the Xiaomeme Redmeme 3 Pro have no custom ROMs you can call 'stable' with a straight face.

Only exception is Oneplus, but not everyone has $400+ to spend on his smartphone.

>>59354403
Dude you're preaching to the choir here. They're always a great buy, but any ROM for them is either broken or nearly broken. I've used dozens of ROMs over my years, but only found Cyan/Lineage/PureNexus to be worth having as daily drivers.

Like, the Kirin 950 is FAST, but the reason no ROMs exist for it is because they don't want to release source code.

You're right though, exclude OnePlus. They've got a decent dev community going.

WHEN THE FUCK IS THE NEW HTC FLAGSHIP GETTING ANNOUNCED?!
>>
>>59365652
Still months away, they just launched the U Ultra, wouldn't make sense to launch another flagship tier phone so soon after.
>>
>>59364993
My current phone is the HTC One.
Going going back to shitty speakers after this, cannot deal.

my Huawei P8 lite broke, again, what the fuck? The same thing, all of sudden red light and it won't start.

Got a falling apart S3 and was looking to upgrade. Only want to spend $100-150, and absolutely need mature custom rom support and a removable battery.

So far it looks love like the S5 fits the bill, but does anyone know of any other phones that also fit the needs, new or used?
>>
>>59365931
Moto G4 Play, though honestly the S5 is better in almost every way. Maybe LG G3 or G4 If you can find one that won't boot loop.
>>
>>59361227
Was talking about LG
Price isn't too much of an issue as long as it's less than $800
What would you recommend performance-wise then?
>>
>>59366428
S5 it is then. Thanks for the response.

Hey guys. Need some help here.

My Z1 compact appears to be dying (I'm on my 3rd battery, camera is getting black spots, ROMs are getting few and poorly updated, power button is falling apart, ...) and I'm starting to look for a replacement.

I'm not sure I want another Sony, as their developer support is pretty shitty (looking at Lineage), but I really want something small. I was looking at Galaxy A3 2017 but it has the SAR rating of a microwave (1,43 compared to 0,74 of Z1 Compact) and since I carry my phone on me at all times I'd love to avoid that... I could accept something a bit bigger than Z1 compact too, but it really needs to fit in a pocket and be usable with 1 hand (daily commute and whatnot), think Xperia XA-sized maybe.

So, budget is about 300€, I'm gonna be using it in Europe, the phone needs to be small-ish, popular enough to get enough developer attention to last it longer than 2 years and a lower SAR rating is a big plus too.

Any suggestions? I'd be very grateful for any help.
>>
>>59367605
Moto G5
>>
>>59367935
Looks promising, but it is a bit big and apparently SAR ratings aren't out yet..
>>
>>59367605
Where's the best place to look up SAR values for recent phones?
>>
>>59368078
Your options are pretty limited if you want an android phone under 5", it's basically Z5 / X Compact or A3 2017. Everything else either too old or shit specs.
>>
>>59368122
Dunno, I usually check GSM arena plus a local carrier or two, values more or less match.

>>59368331
That's what I feared... It's all pretty curious though, surely there's a market for smaller phones out there too, I know a bunch of people who'd prefer them myself, yet nobody seems to be making any.

Even if I could get used to somehow handling a bigger phone one-handed I still dunno how the heck I should carry it around, even this one is sometimes a pain to get in or out of a pocket on the train.

About to order the Oneplus 3T.

Question: Should I worry about using the OTA to download the new OS? (This will be my first android phone. Don't know much.)

Will my phone be okay?

iPhone 5S and SE are both 4" if you don't mind iOS
>>

Yes
>>
>>59368624
Thanks for the tip, but I'd prefer to stick to Android. I love custom ROMs plus I know some basics of Android app development and I'd prefer to keep a device nearby if I ever get into it further.

i'm running rooted stock, never liked Cyanogenmod. I actually love the phone and the size, it's sturdy as fuck and has a great design. best phone i ever had.

wouldn't recommend the M9, from what i've heard it had huge problems and simply didn't perform. if anything you should look at the HTC 10 if you have the budget. otherwise i'd just wait until april to see what they have in store! if the rumors are true Ocean will have some neat features.
>>
>>59370320
I don't like it much either, but it had android 12.1 running which is quite light for the phone, so I thought it would speed things up

Also, is it really that bad the M9? Ive read mixed things about it, mostly about it being a letdown for the price (700$ when it launched), but maybe now it could be a nice purchase?

However, my plan is to buy another HTC device for around 300 $ since I have had 0 issues with this phones

So what are people most excited about?

Galaxy S8+ or XZ Premium?

Is there any other phone with at least 5.4" screen and APTX support?

What's the current state of Nougat roms on Kenzo/Kate devices? Last time I checked (LOS 14.1) the biggest problem was the camera. I remember it not working sometimes but when it did work I couldn't focus on anything.

Had a Z3c and had:
-Headphone jack fail
-Magnetic charging port detach from the phone whilst charging via mains
-Rear panel scratched to shit

Did like the battery/overall dimensions though, just wish the OP3 was better looking. Fucking hate bezels, thank /g/esus for the new trend of deleting them

>Samsung Galaxy S8 is reportedly coming with 5.8” bezel-less screen and without a home button, a fingerprint scanner on the back, next to the camera and an additional button for Bixby AI, Samsung’s answer to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Fuck why did I think the chinks would splurge for cdma. Really don't want to switch networks but I'll have to jump ship. Was also considering the nexus 6p but one plus seems so much better.
Is att the best bet?

How are smartphone cameras nowadays? I have a LG G4 for about a year, never had problems with it but I worry daily about bootloops. 90% of the reason I bought it was for its camera, but I hate the plastic body and lack of a fingerprint reader. Is there anything similar out there with better build quality, fast fingerprint reader and maybe even an OLED screen? SD card slot is welcome, but not really needed.

Does S8 have expandable memory? Still using s4 or s5 but I'm moving back home in a couple weeks so i can finally get a new phone (because fuck yeah 1 year visas and 2 year contracts)
>>
>>59367605
x compact would be my guess but the SAR value of that phone isn't that low either (which annoys me too). And it still doesn't have any kind of los support.

You can get the x compact used on ebay for 280 caliphatebucks.
