Is there any real advantage to Kubuntu over Debian KDE prepackaged with non-free firmware?
Or vice versa, for that matter.

His name Lennert Potter, the creator of systemd.
I would rephrase that question to KDE neon or Debian KDE with non free firmware. In that case: I personally see Debian more as a server solution and less as a desktop daily driver. But to each his/her own, i guess.

So i don't think you're missing out much. If anything, i'd say that neon is the more complete desktop experience.
