Are M.2 SSDs still just memes? Or is the price per gig low enough

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Are M.2 SSDs still just memes?
Or is the price per gig low enough to make the switch viable?
>>
if you're building a new pc, why not?
>>
>SSD
100% meme
>>
literally no benefit over SATA except you can store them sideways when not in use
>>
M.2s will do nothing for the average user. 95% of people will not get anything from it.
Startup, Boot times, and other stuff people mainly buy SSDs for just don't work like that.

And normal SSDs are cheaper. So unless you know you really want it, just get a SATA.
>>
>>59312666

Then what is the purpose of buying an m.2? I personally got one because it's one less cable inside my case and it was on sale for a pretty good price.
>>
>>59312680
basically what you said plus laptops can be made thinner.
that's it.
>>
>>59312666
Then... why? What IS the purpose?
>>
>>59312622
Unless you're transferring between SSDs, there's no noticeable speed increase over a SATA SSD. However, M.2 is fucking awesome because it is so compact. No fucking cabling and it's just cute as fuck. I indeed would pay the premium just for the form factor. Two on a board, or two on a riser card, that's convenient as fuck.

lol ok, pic related is a small HDD array
>>
>>59312688
For insane transfer speeds between several different M.2

If you're putting a ton of files on your computer and organizing on a regular basis, M.2 will give you the fastest transfer speeds between slots.

m. 2280 ssd, like the sm961, typically have more bandwidth, lower latency, and more iops. But it's not worth $300 unless you have very IO constrained workloads.
>>
>>59312688

take smaller space in modern laptops
>>
they're not a meme if you're into SFF.
>>
>>59312622
>SSDs come out
>They are so fast they overload the SATA bus meme
>M.2. Comes out and takes a pci slot in a small formfactor that shouldnt be on a motherboard and disables a pci port while in use
They are still just memes and SATA SSDs still aren't anywhere near the limit of the data transfer rate realistically achieved in modern kernels, northbridges, and sata controllers themselves.

They're really useful for ITX where you've only got that one PCIE slot anyway.

I have the Samsung 960 Evo 250GB M.2-2280 set as my Windows 10 boot drive. I go from power off to desktop in about 6 seconds. This M.2-2280 has a CrystalDiskMark read speeds of over 3200 MB/s and write speeds of over 1900 MB/s.

Compare that to a Samsung 850 SATA drive with its maximum read and write speeds around 500 MB/s, and I don't see how anyone can say these drives are the same.
>>
>>59313011
I don't see an m.2 slot on that board.
>>
>>59313157
Oh never mind, it was under that eye logo.
Too cool 4 me.
>>
>>59313157
it's on top of the PCH, and there's one on the back too.
>>
>>59313088
How does the boot time compare to your regular SATA SSD?

Not even worth it unless you run it in an Angelbird
>>
>>59312622
m.2 ssds are, m.2 nvme is not

performance in the thousands of MB/s rather than the hundreds.
>>
>>59312963
>>M.2. Comes out and takes a pci slot in a small formfactor that shouldnt be on a motherboard and disables a pci port while in use
get your ass a real motherboard kid
>>
>>59312622
No there is m2 based on sata3 and m2 based on pcie

Both are kinda memes but it save space just clips right into your mobo

Not so bad really I have one I only cost 10 bucks more than a standard 2.5 inch
>>
>>59313088
shit i power on about that quick with the 850 over SATA

im still going to grab something similair but i think we've hit peak startup quickness for this moment of time
>>
M.2 SATA SSDs
M.2 SATA SSDs perform up to SATA III speeds (6Gbit/s); the same as other SATA-based SSDs.
M.2 PCI-Express SSDs
While M.2 PCI-Express uses the same PCI-Express protocol as SATA Express, it drops the 'SATA' namesake to avoid confusion. M.2 PCI-Express is set to be the interface of choice for 2014 PC DIY enthusiasts, with its small form factor and 10Gbit/s performance potential (in the first generation).

The m.2 form factor supports sata and pci(nvme) drives. Nvme drives can hit 3gbps while sata m.2 drives can only hit 600mbps.
>>
>>59313290
why? if you m.2 slot supports pci lanes then it is nvme enabled and no different then using a pcie adapter.
>>
>>59313339
Me as well. I assume M.2s really are just for less cables and transfer speeds between other M.2s as another guy said
