It's an Ivy Bridge ITX build with both slots populated by 8gb sticks. Photopoop alone eats up all I allow, ~14gigs.

Uh, that just means Linux left some stuff that could be cleaned in your RAM because cleaning RAM (marking it as used by another program) costs basically nothing at all.

Unless you can show it then often USED this RAM instead of reading the same stuff again from your HDD, it probably didn't impact performance much.

But sure, moar RAM is nice to have, and since it doesn't really bring power consumption of the system up by much it's usually better to have more for the few situations where you might need it.
