How important is CAS latency when considering buying a new RAM?

How important is CAS latency when considering buying a new RAM? Because the price really varies depending on the CAS despite having the same clock and capacity size.

bump?
>>
Very. But don't forget that the frequency also plays a part. Rule of thumb is buy the highest frequency at the lowest CAS your motherboard will support.
>>
>>59300947
But that can catapult prices of a DDR4 to around 200€ for a DIMM
>>
>>59300416
lower CL wont increase your fps.

Just get a few popular medium priced ramsticks.
>>
If you're doing workstation work that you know is ram intensive than
>>59300947
If not I doubt you would be able to feel a difference between different ram timings.
>>
>>59300416
not very

more ram >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> faster ram

So what's stopping people buying some kingston or Corsair at some decent clock rate 8gb a dimm at the cheapest price possible?
>>
>>59302184
it didnt stop me.
>>
>>59302382
Any regrets?
>>
>>59302391
after 3 years? none.

bought the standard Kingston HyperX Black 8GB 1600Mhz CL10
>>
>>59302184
Don't let it stop you anon, unless you just want to flash your benchmark epeen
>>
>>59302391
kingston makes the lowest latency ddr4 ram btw
>>
>>59300416
It makes a big difference in some software.
For example I've noticed a big difference in Microsoft flight simulator.

But not so big in others.

Overall I think lower (absolute *) latency is more important than transfer rate though.
Because software that mostly depends on fast transfer speeds is generally very fast anyways.

(* note that latency is measured in clock ticks, so same CAS but higher MHz is also lower absolute latency)
>>
>>59300416
Not very, since DDR4's faster clock speed makes up for high timings in terms of true latency. You should aim for at least 3000MHz though, since the Memelake CPUs show large gains in gaming performance up to that point, with smaller gains from there. And realistically, any 3000MHz+ kit on the market is going to have timings that are just fine.
