R is not meant to be used for general purpose programming.
It suffers from the usual scripting language problems:
It is slow, uses a lot of resources and if this matters, you are using it wrong and if you look at online guides on how to do stuff, you find that a lot of people load a ton of libraries.

It is meant to be easy to write, making it easy to calculate stuff.
I have written analysis that took days to complete, because I wanted to use it for more, but this is not really where it excels.

What is good about it:
Documentation is usually really good.
Language syntax is really good and most people instantly get it.
These things is Important for scripting languages you don't use all the time.

For me, it is an alternative to matlab.
Matlab scripting is terrible.
I don't write it all the time, so I easily forget syntax things and that makes it hard to read and harder to write.

it depends on what is running for hours and how often you need to run it.
R can store data to disk, easier than any other scripting language I have used.
You can gain something by switching to a faster language, but you can often save a lot more time by optimizing the algorithm.
