If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Reposting from the last thread that got nothing but stallman bot post responses.

I have a problem. It stretches from Linux to Android and ONLY on these 2 platforms. My file server is based on Windows 7. (I know i know, but remote desktop is great). I'm sharing 2 file shares over the network to 2 Windows based clients, a Chromebook, 2 Android devices, and 2 Ubuntu 16.04 machines.

After an undetermined amount of time of the server being up, all the Linux and Android machines will no longer be able to see the server in their network tabs of their respective file managers. Nor am I able to connect to the server manually using the local IP of my file server and proper credentials. The Ubuntu desktops gives a "connection timed out" error, while the Android devices give an "unknown error has occured" (using solid explorer app with FTP module). While this is happening, all other devices on my network are still able to connect and interact with the server with zero issues.

All of this is fixable by simply rebooting the server. This doesn't take long at all as it's OS is installed on an SSD. But this is a really stupid problem to be having. What on earth could be causing this? Pic related is me now connected to my server from my tablet after a reboot. Can provide server specs if it would help.

So yesterday I did a reinstall 'cause my install was all kinds of fucked up, but in particular, my /var/log/ kept filling up. I didn't bother researching much as I was going to do a reinstall anyway.

On my new, fresh install, I looked at /var/log/ again and there are a few files that look kinda big again:
6,9G syslog
3,5G kern.log

is this, in fact, normal in the first day, or should I investigate further? I haven't used this install for much at all yet, if that is relevant.

Okay. It seems like it has something to do with iwl3945, and that it can't find the firmware for my wlan card (which I'm not planning to install as I use a better one, so I'll have to see how I can prevent my system from caring about the existence of the intel wlan). It keeps whining about this all the time, odd behavior.

I don't understand why dependency conflicts are such a big deal.

Now "flatpak" is a thing which attempts to solve it with lots of redundant libraries.

Why can't you just have something similar to flatpak but instead of bundling redundant libraries why can't it just bundle symlinks to the libraries?
This way each application has its own exact versions of every library specified and won't even depend on the major version symlinks we have on our systems already, so there would be no dependency conflicts for having multiple versions of the same library right? But at the same time you avoid having too many redundant libraries like flatpak does

HAHAHA US NERDS AMIRITE GUYS

He's right though. I guess if you know your way around (x)ubuntu and the default i3 config you'll be fine pretty fine but I still have to explain the less obvious shortcuts.
>turn off display with mod+esc
>lock workstation with mod+x
>if the physical keyboard layout being German and the default xkbmap being us(intl) throws you off, switch between them with mod+alt_left
>prtscrn takes screenshot of all displays, shift+prtscrn only does the focused window, timestamped screenshot go in /tmp
>don't hit mod+shift+e unless you REALLY want to log out, there is no query
>there is no firefox, use icecat
>don't worry, nano is supposed to look like that, use gedit if you don't like it
>the trackpad is disabled, use the trackpoint or a USB mouse

What would you have to explain to someone who is used to your distro's default behaviour and settings and needs to use your computer?

Trump has a travel ban, not an immigration ban. It affects some Muslim countries.
Trump's change to the H1-B visas is to force employees to pay equal wages to imported and local workforce, removing the cheap labor attraction.
The media is trying to confuse people into thinking that Trump literally banned immigration on racist grounds. He didn't.

Fedora.
You'll get proper documentation for your system and most of the things you'll learn will work on most other Linux. It's also properly managed bleeding edge.
Ubuntu has to deal with debian inherited bullshit, incompatibilities between packages from debian and Ubuntu repositories, some packages have been removed recently without proper reason, the Amazon integration (that is now optional), outdated vga drivers and so on. I've personally never seen an Ubuntu install that worked properly ootb.

Personally, I'm using arch and considering jumping to nixOS.

Also I believe that PiHole works by being your dns server. Therefore: No, it can't block specific parts of websites, as long as they are hosted on the same server as the parts you don't want to block.

What is the difference between using
$nmcli connection up [essid]
and using the "turn on wifi" button in my GNOME wm?
Because the button works, but on the command line I get: 'Error: Connection activation failed.'

The button in GNOME might be for the actual network interface, not your connection. Nmcli is for connecting to specific connections.

Ok I don't really understand what you are trying to say... because the turn on wifi button in GNOME automatically connects me to the wifi aswell.
But when I do
$ifconfig wlan0 up
&nmcli con up [essid]
it doesn't work.

Additional info: nmcli works for pre-shared key WPA but with enterprise WPA (aka the one you need a username and a personal password for) I got the problem mentioned above.

How do I know whether or not to use UEFI or BIOS? How do I choose between MBR and GPT? I get I need to use GPT for certain volume sizes or amounts of partitions or something like that, but is there any reason to use MBR?

I'm sure I fucked up my install because of this. All I know is that when I start in UEFI mode, the livecd won't even boot up, but when I start in legacy (BIOS?) mode and I partition the disks, esp (EFI system partition) automatically comes up when I add the "boot" flag, even though I'm definitely not in UEFI mode.

There's more to it, but in essence debian is old, outdated but rock solid stable, also avoids most popular software which isn't fully free to their standards and uses generally shittier alternatives. If you try to circumvent these problems, it becomes garbage, unstable and messy.

Manjaro is up to date and has all the software you could want, but its way of simplifying the Arch process tends to crap out sometimes, behave oddly, and generally isn't really up to the very high standards of stability more mainsteam distros offer.

Hi /fglt/

I'm looking to pick up a super cheap secondhand laptop so I can do some mobile haxxording and other stuff, either with Ubuntu (preferred) or maybe Debian. What's the minimum spec I should be looking at especially in terms of CPU? Ubuntu says 700MHz but 700MHz on what? Sandy Bridge? Haslel? Netburst?

I'm planning to do an SSD upgrade anyway to remove that bottleneck and make it boot really fast as well.

check how well your hardware is compatible w/ GNU/Linux

use h-node to check whether you'll be able to make an usable install without non-free parts

if everything you have works well w/ 100% free stuff, try Debian, so at least the start will be comfy rather than fucking around with parts that aren't part of the Debian system. when I was newer than now, I really hated it if my fresh install wasn't very much usable right away.

if your hardware isn't well supported in the free world, maybe you don't want Debian.

Default is to deny incoming (except for some stuff, I think, check manually). Then just add things you need. At home I allow all local traffic.
Also, if it's a laptop that you carry around much, consider using firewalld instead. It supports firewall zones which you can associate with certain networks (with NetworkManager).

Does the proprietary Nvidia driver support Kernel Mode Switching and TTYs at native resolution nowadays?
>>
Will 2018 FINALLY be the year of the Linux desktop?
Most of the common DEs will not use X, Unity should be stable on Mir, Gnome already is using Wayland by default, KDE is getting there etc.
Snaps or Flatpack will make it easier and more user friendly to get software. Wine has progressed a lot and is improving at a rapid pace.
The Vulkan API, in the games that have it, makes a big difference and brings performance almost on par with Direct X, and while market share isn't growing at least Valve aren't giving up on Linux either.
The open source and closed source GPU drivers have been improving steadily, Kernel 4.11 should bring a lot of power management improvements etc.
We're seeing more and more programs get a Linux version, and the FOSS programs in areas that were lacking like video editing are now starting to become usable for home users.

It always feels like we're on the verge of reaching critical mass, where the common user friendly distros will finally be good enough to at least catch up to OS X percentages of market share.
It's like we're only missing a good final push to get the ball really rolling, something like Adobe finally making CC available on GNU/Linux, or at the very least Microsoft pissing off Windows users some more.

Are either Snap or Flatpak capable of being the one and only package manager on a system capable of maintaining all of its packages? I mean not right now, I'm sure a lot of work would need to be done. I'm just wondering if their design fundamentally prevents them from serving that purpose.

They both seem like they require to be installed on top of a system that already has another package-manager which maintains the majority of the system and Snaps/Flatpaks would just be for larger applications.

Is Linux security even possible? What should I install to protect from hackers?
>>

>says clearly what's going on

To be expected of some idiot willing to install a downstream distribution, only to feel cool.
>>
>>59314367
Yes it is.
Install:
Gentoo nomultilib hardened + selinux
iptables
local DNS server
Tor
encrypt important data.
suspend to ram (sleep) pc when you don't use it
Never use words CIA, NSA, Trump, FBI, or they start to listen your traffic automatically.
Always be ready to destroy your HDD, SSD/
Don't use dumb passwords, don't use anything relatet to you or your family in password.
Passwords must be at least 14characters long.

Doesn't LC_ALL=C also fix this?

mkvmerge

Why is is better than ffmpeg?

It's wrong and you have no idea what you're talking about. Also your Python problem was probably related to the Python 3.6 update, which means all you had to do was rebuild your programs to use the new Python version.

Kill yourself because I know you will read this on here.

Is calculate Linux good if i just want something that works? I don't mind learning and fucking around but I'd rather my main desktop be stable.

Is Devuan worth using or is it too unfinished?

The problem is, no Snowden, no Vault 7 will change anything. Today people accept the botnet as a very normal thing among tech.

redpill me on the difference between loonix and freebsd
>>
>>59315915
loonix is a kernel, freebsd is an os
loonix werks because blob support
freebsd doesn't werks because no drivers
>>
>>59315915
FreeBSD gets some technologies before Linux due to licensing. For instance ZFS and dtrace.
>>

What's the point in using *BSD, when it ports Linux apps?

Well, it made people aware.
Also not everyone is a cuck. When normies hear/read about spying, they think twice when installing program X/Y.

I think it's possible to use gimp from the command line, how can I use it to mark a few pixels with a different colour?
>>
>>59316786
Please learn about kill signals. You should NEVER use -9 (unless a process is actually a dead and buried zombie process), since -9 actually *kills* the program, which means, it doesn't save states, frees memory or anything.
>>
>>59316750
lol kill yourself

What is the goal you want to archive by marking a few pixels?

I have a script that downloads satellite images from a website every 5 minutes. I want to use gimp to mark my city in every image so I can know exactly where it is.

Look into imagemagick. It's much better for scripting. http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/draw/

Can you still not get the proprietary r9 280x drivers in ubuntu 14.04
>>
>>59316929
Thanks!
>>
>>59316964

I tried to select them through the additional drivers dialog but it's broken

So i tried to do it through an apt-get but got this

$ sudo apt-get install fglrx

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
unity-control-center :
Depends: libcheese-gtk23 (>= 3.4.0) but it is not going to be
Depends: libcheese7 (>= 3.0.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

I'm trying to use the official AMD drivers because they are what you need to use an r9 280x with CodeXL, an AMD OpenCL/OpenGL IDE with a lot of features
