It wouldn't cost that much, they'd more than cover it by making a watch maybe $5-10 more expensive. This toy plastic shit sucks.

>why do companies advertise WATER RESIST so much when all that means is it'll survive a handwashing, nothing more?

Maybe it used to have meaning before it became a marketing gimmick?

Casio used to write "Illuminator" on their watches with electroluminescent backlights. Eventually the name became popular, so they just started writing it on all their standard LED watches.
>>
>>59297941
My understanding is the ILLUMINATOR moniker is for that green backlight that lights up the entire LCD instead of those gay lightbulbs that are kinda useless.

Its the difference between the F19 and the F106, probably same module but the F106 has an illuminator, and the F19 has the lightbulb thing.

Either way, it would be nice to not have ILLUMINATOR and WATER RESIST all over the watch face.

Yes. It's as bad as you'd expect.
Cheap feeling, the leather strap is actually unwearable, bad qc (the dial printing on mine is fucked up), terrible accuracy (i'd say it loses a minute every 12 hours).

Normally linen dial refers to something like this.

Indeed, if you're looking for 24h you'll have to pay more.
Luch just uses a regular movement with no minute or seconds hand. I'm sure the people working there today wouldn't even be able to make a 24h movement if theh tried.

You'd need to change the dial to something with long and clear indices every 5 minutes, and get a long and thin hour hand.
The cheapest (mechanical) 24h watches that I know of are Vostok Komandirskies (in the 35 case with automatic movement, so a bit more expensive than the usual Komandirskies). I have no idea about finding replacement hands or dials for them, apart from the Vostok-made ones that wouldn't fit the needs of a single-hand watch.

Thank you! If you want to make it an apparent feature, engrave that on the back, give me a clean aesthetic, with your company logo/brand name on the front, and numbers. I'm even fine with "swiss made" if it actually means something, or if its so small and unobtrusive like on this face >>59298193. You never notice the japanese movement unless you stop and look at it. However, even that should be on the back and not on the watch.

I take it back then. I gave my girlfriend fair warning about gift watches, that if she wants to make it a surprise I may not like it and not wear it. Much less money than a Rolex though.

If my grandparents bought me a nice watch for graduation I would hope they let me pick it so I don't end up with a sea dweller on my 6.5 inch wrist, I don't know if I could bring myself to return it or sell it.

can I ask what the watch was?

I don't understand the ten dollar shelf at walmart being filled with watches that say "QUARTZ" in big letters. I guess they figure most people don't know what the fuck it means and think its a feature.

Know what to look for in the watch:
Raketa 2609.NP (new, precision) movement with "SU" stamped on it.
Long seconds hand.
If the case is NOT black, the minutes hands should be black, if the case is black the minutes hand should be polished metal.
Black dial on black case and gray dial on non black case.
Dial should have Russian gibberish at the bottom with "cccp". Anything that days "Russia" is fake.
Look for a high, almost flat crystal. Domed crystals are not genuine.
The last copernics made had that little drawing on the dial.
That's it, really.

So I've had this Jacques Lemans London 1-1844D <https://www.jacques-lemans.com/shop/5662/london-1-1844> for maybe two years now. The only problems with it are 1) the huge 10ATM text next to the date window, and 2) the mineral glass is not that hard, and has a small scratch already.

I've been thinking about getting the Nomos Ahoi Atlantik <http://www.nomos-glashuette.com/the-watches/ahoi/ahoi-atlantik/>. It's not too expensive, and would be a step up from my current one. Also, the sapphire glass would probably last forever. What does /wt/ think about this? I know you don't like these huge dial hipster watches generally...

Finally some non-dogshit mechanicals came in. Two separate customers brought an Orient Tristar and a Seiko 5 7009. The Orient is here for evaluation, since it started to run like shit only a year after service (crystal was replaced also a year ago, so I guess it gets a lot of abuse), the Seiko 5 will get a crystal, and ultrasound cleaning of the case and bracelet and a complete movement service. The Komandirskie is mine. It's fucked.

I'm fairly new to watches, but from what I'm gathering, some of the >$200 watches are only priced that way because of the name and reputation of the brand.

I can see why Seagull is going to penetrate really well; they're going to charge a fair price for a complicated watch, their only hurdle is getting over the CHINESE MADE problem.
>>
So I kind of have all the watches I wanted since I started being interested in watches a month ago.

The problem with Seagull is while they can make quality watches they have poor quality control.

There's no difference in the technical ability between ETA and Seagull but ETA just has better QC.

The problem is better QC means higher prices because a certain percentage of your product is thrown in the bin.

There are some that are smaller. They seem rarer, but they exist. IWC has a 40mm one (might be, Stowa too, even has a 36mm.

also actually making movements that will work for any period of time and be worth servicing to keep working.

A mechanical timepiece can be made cheaply, but there are certain luxury brands that are worth their price, even inflated as it is, because no other brand can do what they do at the same quality for cheaper.

Don't take that as meaning a watch is shitty if it costs less than 3 grand, but don't assume the chinese made stigma has no basis.

If you want a nice Chinese watch, you may need to be prepared to pay more than you think as well.

No I get it; nice shit that will last simply costs more. But when theres a $300 quartz watch, or an automatic watch that is $500 when their own company makes $100 automatics, theres clearly some inflated prices on the products, simply because there is no competition.

There are a million "diver" watches, chronograph watches, and Automatics which I think are holding prices at the ~$150 mark for decently made watches.

>>59303387
Well back to your original question. The Seiko 5 in question has a simple bead blasted finish all over its case. The Sarb033 has different levels of polish and brushing at different parts of the case

That machining alone will drive up the cost. The movement has one less complication, the day, but hacks, handwinds, and is regulated to a higher standard of accuracy.

The 5 has painted lume indices, while the Sarb has applied indicies with applied lume. It is simply more labor intensive to manufacture and is a more refined product.

At some level a watch is more than the sum of its parts, and higher value watches are in some cases valuable BECAUSE they are valuable. If you buy a used Rolex for $5,000 dollars, wear it for a year, and sell it, guess how much you will get. Probably about $5,000 dollars. So you just wore a Rolex for a year for free or close to it.

Now I'm simplifying, you should always expect to lose money on a watch, but if you like it, it can be worth it to you.

Pretty minty for a ~20 year old watch. Not a scratch on it, still has the caseback sticker, etc.

Should I keep this strap on it or put the stock perforated strap back?
>>
>>59303504
That makes a bit of sense, and I should have thought a little more about the machining and finishing of the overall product. Its before 8am for me and I'm on hour 2 a conference call.

There are so many watches on Amazon I think are pretty, minimalistic, and made by a reputable manufacturer, but they're $600. At that point its just jewelry.

I think Bill Gates' words on watches kinda stuck with me and I'll paraphrase
A $10k watch is no better than a $10 watch, it doesn't tell time any better, requires maintenance and upkeep, its heavier, and only serves as a piece of jewelry, beyond its function of telling time.

He went on to say a plastic wrist strap wouldn't cut into or give any uncomfortable feeling when he was holding his daughter. He and warren buffett are kinda similar in that they're billionaires, but don't buy expensive shit for the sake of owning expensive shit.

I have money and I have some nice things, but I'm super cheap and don't like trying to justify a $600 watch.
>>
>>59303595
they are correct. People buy these watches because they like them. Some like that they are expensive and pretty, some like them because it is difficult to make them and they enjoy the engineering of the movement and the craftsmanship of the case.

Making a hyper accurate mechanical watch is an amazing achievement, a redundant achievement compared to high accuracy quartz that can do it for pennies on the dollar, but still amazing all the same.

You should buy and wear watches that do it for you. If that's a 10 dollar casio, a 100 dollar Seiko, a 300 dollar High Accuracy Quartz, a 500 dollar Seiko, a 10k Rolex, a 50k Patek or a 100k Lange, so be it.
>>

It's not thaaaat bad, for what it is. A tier list obviously simplifies and omits a lot.
There are a lot of choices I absolutely disagree with, but overall it's not an awful outlook of the market.
Just as an example, A Lange & Sohne doesn't really have much of an history or heritage, it's not even 30 years old.

It's all over the place in terms of randomly throwing brands into categories.

This one is a lot more accurate although it's just showing shit for newbies to aim for with brands it's kind of hard to fuck up badly with.

The Monsieur and the new Première Camélia both have in-house movements and are really great. The Calibre 1 and Calibre 2 movements look amazing.
They also have some flying tourbillons made for them by APRP.
They've been on a roll lately. They're trying to catch up to Cartier, and I'm 100% fine with that.

What are you doing that your wrist swells that much? You should talk to your doctor
>>
>>59305575
neon orange and green is a bad color scheme. Its alright on a bonkers hyper car because you want people to look at you, but on a classy wristwatch, its as gaudy as a 2 inch gold and diamond rap star watch.
>>
>>59305841
Yes. That's actually part of the reason I sold my smart watch and bought a real one, so I wouldn't have to take it off as much
>>
>>59305872
I get up, go workout, go to work where I'm standing and walking around all day, go for a run, back to work, then home for my evening activities. I don't know how much it actually swells, but it's just a little looser in the morning and evenings before I do stuff
>>
>>59305896
Don't sleep with your watch on. Sweat is mildly corrosive and will wear out a watch quicker through corrosion. At least take it off and put it on your nightstand.
>>
is there a trick to getting a winding stem back in?

I've unscrewed a widding stem screw to take it out to repair a watch. And now when I'm reassembling the watch the winding stem wont stay in
>>

So I just finished my first watch repair.

Took the movement out, took the hands off and put them back on again in alignment because they were out of alignment before.

I fucked it up a bit because I bent the second hand with the hand press and I had to try and restraighten it. Plus my hands were sweating so bad that I've probably covered the movement in oil.

Still don't feel confident doing this to a watch I value.
>>
>>59306340
If you must sleep and shower with your watch on, get a really expensive diver watch designed to be in salt water, and probably rated for 200+meters.

Theres obviously no real water pressure in the shower or hot tub, however with the added heat and soaps, that usually is what defeats the water resistance. I don't know much about actual diver watches, but expect to pay more than $400 for it.

Or you know, just take it off at night. If you're doing that to a $10 Casio F91 and it lasts a year, then fuck it leave it on. Don't be shocked if water gets in though.
>>
>>59306389
You don't need to spend $400 for a 200m rated watch

It's not just about telling the time, it's about craftsmanship and attention to the details. A quartz 10$ will probably keep time better than a lot of mechanicals under 700$ but that doesn't mean it has the same quality control, engineering and manufacturing values applied to it.
There's a tier where it's overpriced and shit of course but a little above it is also where you don't buy just for jewelry but also because of the craftsmanship and engineering mostly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGPjFFMD3c0
Like this, it's expensive as fuck and probably 50% of the price is just because it's a Patek but it's also a masterpiece that fills all i said above, and not like there's anything as complicated in the market or something.

Why the fuck did they make the movements required so small? Why didn't they increase the scale? You don't need to adjust by minutes only seconds.
>>
>>59306699
I haven't done it, but I always read that you shouldn't even be able to see the lever move
>>

Because these are my shitters stats after regulating as best I can.

Dial down: +60 seconds
Crown down: +117 seconds
Crown up: - 20 secons

>>
>>59306854
Those readings are either so unstable that they are worthless and you should have listened to me and bought a timegrapher, or the movement is totally fucked and needs a service.
>>
>>59306854
it could depend on a bunch of things, some of them are;
-amplitude too low
-hairspring uncentered inbetween regulating pins
-distance between regulating pins too large
-improperly weighted balance

Is your amplitude good? it should usually be near 280 or higher on dial up/down. (check your lift angle BTW)

if not check to see if the hairspring is centered first, then try to make the gap between pins smaller.
>>
>>59307080
This watch is ancient there's no info on what the left angle should be. There's barely any info that the watch itself exists let alone the movement stats.

beat error is basically what it says it means, the amount of ticks it misses. on most newer watches you can regulate this by moving the part that holds the balance spring collet.
