Its fucking nothing

One of the fundamental problems is the surface area of lithium for holding charge By using a thin solid electrolyte you could fit more layers inside of a battery, but you're not addressing the underlying issue.
There is also the ever present volatility of lithium as well.

This isn't a solution.

His name is actually "Goodenough"?

If it turns out to be anything, tesla will license the tech. Not sure why you would think otherwise.

You're retarded, for two reasons:

1) Even if this technology were to render Tesla's current battery technology obsolete, the deals Tesla's made in pursuance of their battery production goals include buying a shit-ton of lithium, which is still useful in the production of these new cells. They still have most of the resources they need, and even if they don't want to make the new batteries, they can still easily sell their lithium resources to someone who does.

2) You shouldn't be rooting against anyone who's trying to bring the electric car into the mainstream. What matters is that electric cars *do* achieve ubiquity, not who does it.

looks like his old battery was goodenough to be #1 and now his new one is too

As the Hacker News comments point out, this solid state battery shit is too heavy to compete with Telsa's batteries in electric cars because in a car the primary constraint on battery capacity is not volume but weight. However, it is well suited for smartphone, laptops, etc. Who cares if the battery weighs 1/3 more? Of course, as the same comments point out, the gains may actually be used to make phones/laptops even thinner instead of making same size phones run longer.

For the SAME energy it weighs 2.5x as much as a Li-on battery.

For the same size of todays li-on battery it would weigh 7x as much and give 3x as much power.

The weight is the biggest issue. Especially for cars.
