Do anapt-get updateandapt-get upgradeand see if it complains. Sometimes it suggests doingapt-get -f installwithout any other arguments, or something likeapt-get install --fix-missing vlc. Check your/etc/apt/sources.listand/etc/apt/sources.list.dand make sure they look reasonable. Are you using jessie or stretch?
This kind of thing happens sometimes on Debian, either because you have an unusual combination of sources or because some packages that should be in the archive aren't. If you're fully on Debian stable without any software from anywhere else this shouldn't happen.
