IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

yes 15 inch I can't remember the exact model, some guy had it at work. I think it might have been a W550s or a T540p.

don't get me wrong I love thinkpads but I'd never pay $2k for a brand new P50 display that's worse than certain 2012 macbooks.

used 1/3 price and get to replace it? sure.

Here's a tip for Sandy/Ivy Bridge laptops, YouTube can push out VP9 encoded videos which turn ThinkPads in to space heaters due to inefficient software decoding.

Use H264ify to force H264 videos which can use hardware decoding.

idk, many people get used to them or hook them up to an external monitor and so on.

average display quality I guess, but you still can't beat the (durability+serviceability/price) ratio of a thinkpad.

I mean really, display wise the alternative is a Macbook or some $3k gaymen laptop or some flimsy whatever chink shit with horrendous maintainability that literally falls apart in two years.

Why do you guys think buying used laptops and installing Linux protects you from the botnet? The NSA probably knows that buying used thinkpads is a meme, so they probably bought a ton of them, installed a botnet in the hardware, and sell them on eBay for cheap to catch pedophiles like you guys.

no, Thinkpad Battery Controllers can be set by software to allow charge to a certain levels, and to start recharging also at a certain level.

these are usually set on windows using the Thinkpad Power Manager, or on Linux using TP-smapi (thinkpad-acpi on IvyBridge and newer)

-chicklet vs nonchicklet
-2x4 ram vs 2x2

it all comes down to the physical shape of the laptop, the battery life, and if you plan on gayming.

>>59276681
>You would go to 60, disconnect charger, drop to 40, connect charger and so on?

no, in Lenovo Power manager I've set the battery so that it charges to a maximum of 60%, then when it hits 40% it starts charging again until 60% and so on over and over.

this is a known way to protect your battery.

you have to take into account that the laptop was plugged in all the time, and a 40-60-40 cycle generally takes weeks.

How do you set it to go over and over and over? Mine for example is right now at maximum 80% and it just stays there.
>>
>>59276812
He thinks your software is charging and discharging between 40 and 60 even when it's plugged in, that's the confusion. You're saying that only happens when you're on battery anyway right, you've just limited the part you use.
>>
>>59276638
>>59276751
nnah, theres no need for them to install anything on the hardware. all thinkpads are already backdoored , same as the consumer laptops.

thinkpads, as most Intel based laptops carry something called Intel Management Engine, which is a fully "shadow os", with its own CPU (ARC) connected to everything, it can turn off the computer, turning on, taking screenshots, display images on screen, recording audio, perform any administrative task on hardware, even with the computer turned off, and can connect to internet via its own mac address.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Active_Management_Technology

if you are that paranoid you can more or less cripple it , using a SPI Flasher.

in this state the battery is slowly discharging to 40 and slowly charging to 60, I can't explain exactly how and why the circuitry works like that, I just take advantage of this and use it as a UPS in case I have to take the laptop out for a few hours or there's a couple of mins power outage (happens once a month where I live).

Your T420 was mass-produced and is now considered obsolete by the vast majority of original owners. The only other things that will have bargain binned as hard are desktops for similar large-scale enterprise setups, though even those are similar prices to complete thinkpads of the same time and the only advantage is that they don't use mobile processors.

New shit especially isn't going to be a real step up because intel expects you to pay the same as you did five years ago for a few percent in IPC improvements. You're better off just clustering T420's if you actually want processing power.

That's not too bad right? Getting about 6-8 hours on W10 on bal mode. Added extra RAM. Future upgrades: m2 SSD, replace Intel N with AC wifi, possibly new battery via warranty and a 1080p IPS matte display.
Scared to spend too much as I'm still chasing a bargain Dell E7230 or even a X240 but that's hard to find dirt cheap. Elite folio 13" would have been nice too but beggars can't be choosers. Happy with it so far though.

all intel processors from Core2Duo have some sort of this technology, some probably have it disabled as its features are mostly intended for corporate use. but because its a closed sourced blob and we cannot audit it whether is active or not on a particular device is unknown.

we know its active on Thinkpads because of their enterprise use and because of the efforts of the Coreboot devteam

If I'm just looking for something for miscellaneous tasks, in bed or otherwise, and perhaps some light gaming/actual work, would something like a T420 or X220 be a decent buy at ~$130? There's a seller on ebay offering them with decent-ish sized SSDs in them and everything, and I'm trying to decide if I should jump on one.

Currently have an r60 kicking around, tied to a base, and I'm debating whether to buy a new battery for it or just upgrade all together. The fact that they don't seem to be the easiest to actually lock down a quality battery for doesn't help matters.

That said, I also cannot decide whether to go for an X-Series or the T. The X looks nice, but I'm worried that I'll regret not going for the larger screen of the T-Series.
I'm open to suggestions for other similarly sized, powered, and priced models as well, but thoughts?

I also see a lot of talk on replacing displays on these. If I were to pick one of these up, what would be some decent quality of life modifications I could make to them?
>>

At least this is my impression i'm currently trying to get a good price on the x230t after having owned a t420 for about a year or two.

the bigger screen is nice i guess, but it still is only big enough for one window even using a tiling window manger. that's my ultimate reasoning for wanting a 200 series
>>
>>59275341

>>
>>59279572
I've looked at the tablets before, and while they definitely look nice, buying an actual drawing tablet last year sort of took away one of the reasons I might get one.

IPS and better iGPU is definitely nice, but how much of a jump in price is that going to bring?
One benefit is built in USB3.0, I suppose.

It did just occur to me that neither of the two X-Series would have disc drives, which still feels weird to me, but I could deal.
>>
>>59279172

what's the idle temp with no fan?

can't be higher than ~50, I've seen these things wihth absolutely no thermal paste, just the heatsink barely touching the cpu and they stayed at 53 or so. load is another thing.

in your case something's not right tho, seems like the C states are disabled somehow (mainly C6) or you got some sort of malware/bg process running non stop on both cores. try updating the bios and reinstalling the Lenovo drivers.

the point is, this isn't an 15 year old Athlon, the temps shouldn't shoot up at idle when the fan is turned off.

Not bad but the 11.6 screen is small as fuck. 8570p has best display for movies and stuff as far as I know.

Or you could get the 2170p and hook it to a stolen cheap vga 1080 monitor.
>>

Nah the size isn't the problem, my t100ta is tiny too. In fact, the size is going to be great cause I'll be using it at work. I'm more worried about the colors being super washed out and shit like the latitudes we use at work.

My sister uses her laptop on the carpet, I'd rather get her a fanless celery with 4gb ram and 1080p display when her current one dies.

What do you like about them? I've never had a chance to try an elitebook personally, but just from looking at the design they've never grabbed me so much. For example the keys look flat, the trackpoint buttons aren't shaped and lack a dedicated middle button, and the directional keys are in line with the rest of the keyboard where I prefer having them stick out a bit to make it easier to navigate the keyboard by feel. None of that's a huge turnoff for me, but as I am now I certainly wouldn't be paying more for one than a thinkpad.

The keys look flat but they look like they've got decent depth, that aluminium+plastic design as opposed to an all plastic design, the hinge looks much more reliable, touchpad is better, touchpoint is worse(I use touchpad more).

For me it's mostly aesthetic.

I really don't know why they haven't done that. Considering they got all that feedback on the retro Thinkpad idea, there's clearly an audience for it.

who said mint condition and refurbished keyboard?

I'm talking about a regular used one.

ofcourse refurbished with a 6 or 12-month warranty is more than 200
>>
>>59288228
And I was talking about good condition. That means:

>no scratches whatsoever
>hinges stiff as the day they were produced
>battery with at least 80% of its original capacity
>refurbished or new keyboard

buying anything else is retarded because you'd spend more money on refurbishing a grade b used laptop than you'd spend on a refurbished

m8 for 255 I can literally pick up a

>>
>>59288379
>good condition
>no scratches whatsoever
>new keyboard
that's some high standards m8

legit businesses selling used laptops tend to be a lot less tight on that, A rank / "good rank" tends to mean something like
>maybe some light scratches on the outside, nothing big or ugly
>keyboard is either like new or has, at most, very slight shininess
>hinges aren't loose
>battery holds the charge reliably for a few hours at least

X230 and do the X220 keyboard swap if you really like the old style KB

You will need to get a new palmrest and modify BIOS

Also, get an IPS (or tablet version) panel unless you can bear TN

Keep in mind though that the X230 had battery DRM so that leaves owners fucked as the laptop ages and batteries become harder to find (there is some published work about circumventing)
>>59294107
just disable in BIOS unless you're at a higher level of autism, which I respect and understand
>>59295587
fuck gook QC
not going to get one until they have a proper western facing market
might as well throw the money down the drain
>>
im getting about 3.2 hours out of my x230, what do to improve? any guides on the subject?
>>

install tlp

I got an x230 tablet with an i7 and the battery life is horrid, i wish i had known about the battery authentication thing before i got the x230 tablet, because a new battery is stupid expensive, but the tablet was pretty cheap on its own.
>>
>>59296429
im on windows, of course. linux is way less power efficient

the other day I found an anon in another thread with the same T420 problems I have.

Does this happen to any of you:

-put your Windows 7 T420 to sleep: half the time it powers back on from sleep, but the screen stays off until you hard reset
-hibernate: on returning from hibernate, mouse buttons are fucked up (seems both are right click on mine)
-every once in a while on startup the audio driver fails to load, necessitating a restart

I find it difficult to believe this is a hardware issue, but considering how I've seen almost no one else online with the same issues, and I've done a few clean installs now using both official Lenovo drivers and windows generics, my conclusion is it has to be isolated to my machine and it has to be a hardware issue.

I had the first issue, no idea about the other two.

Check the Event Viewer after doing the hard reset, for me it was the intel wireless driver doing some stupid shit.

you can disable stuff you don't use in the bios like ethernet.
update bios.
install lenovo update manager and install drivers and softwares from Lenovo.

Installing System foundation is pretty important.

Just bought a 2170p.

Other than the small touchpad, what does /tpg/ think of this cute little beast?
>>
>>59299141

The allround linux support is alright but even with a clusterfuckintosh you get better battery life. Unless you use a really really stripped down crippled DE and you choke it with TLP laptoptools whatever it's called, then any linux is just awful if you're on the move a lot and every battery hour counts.

Just stating the obvious m8

Latest Kaby Lake CPU (But supports Win 7)
32 or 64 gigs of RAM

I did something similar once, with a Medion laptop, which is rebranded lenovo.

However, it broke down after about a year, the mobo was completely fried.

It was a lot of fun, especially because it worked, which wasn't guaranteed.

But know that it broke down and rebooting didn't work. Had to shut down and push button.

I'm confused, is the t60 manufactured by Lenovo or IBM? I just saw one without a Lenovo logo and with IBM logo.
>>
I got offered, completely free, a t60 or t61, and a x200. What should I expect? Don't plan to use them for anything ridiculous, might end up not using them but keeping them anyway
>>
>>59292877
The old keyboard had noticeable flex on all models. The new one doesn't bend in the slightest. That's a fact.
>>
>>59293249
that's normal for the old keyboard. at least on lenovo models. IBMs didn't have this problem. lenovo only managed to fix this when they introduced the new keyboard.
>>
>>59300876
Solid laptops, you could do a T601 iirc.

Also I'll buy the X200 from you if you do international shipping.
>>

no. battery is not switchable. well it is with a bit of work but it's not made to be switchable. I like the silver though. thinking about buying an X270 silver

>>
>>59300949
>on all models
yes. because it's the same keyboard on all models. it's worse on T series though. X series feels a little bit stiffer
>>
>>59300876
It's Lenovo but a lot of them still have the IBM logo. Also approximately 90% of the T60 design was done by IBM. Lenovo kept almost every aspect of earlier T series models for the T60.
>>
>>59300958
>yes.

no.
>>
>>59300958
No it isn't, you ignorant faggot. There's no flex at all on pre-T400 models because there was a goddamn steel backplate. On post-T400 models, the flex is by far most noticeable on the X220, which has a major structural weakness in the lower-left corner by the Expresscard slot. Don't post about shit you don't know about ever again.
>>
>>59301031
>lower-left corner by the Expresscard slot
this was about the keyboard, not the palmrest you giant cumrack. learn to read or kys faggot

I have a x250, its around 1.3 kg, is there lighter one in thinkpad series ?

>>59300876
Just for fun I'll probably try putting coreboot or libreboot on one of them. Between the t60 and x200, which is easier to flash a free bios on? Can it be done without special hardware? Also, wtf happened with libreboot leaving GNU?

Can a t60 play any gaymes? Obviously just indie pixel graphics stuff from steam like risk of rain. Will those work at 60fps?

Yes, and the keyboard on the X220 has massive flex in the lower-left corner, because there's practically nothing there structurally. It's mostly empty space if you don't have anything occupying the slot.

>>59301122
If you've got ATI graphics it's pretty solid for early-2000s games. Integrated can't play shit.

Bought a mini dock series 3 for my X220.

It wobbles like crazy. I thought these things supposedly fit into docks nicely. How is someone supposed to type on this thing?
>>
>>59301397
>mini dock series 3
They are supposed to yes, can you take a pic of yours?

I modified mine to be able to use it with my X220t so it did wobble so I simply put two small paper wedge for the dock to hold the laptop correctly
>>
I did it guys, typing this on my t430 bought from a local store that renovates laptops.

The keyboard is weird, but I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Everything is going smooth as fuck. My last laptop was 6 years old so it was high time for a switch.

Thanks guys for making me fall for the meme.
>mfw no pics yet

>>59301477
How much did you pay for it?

By the way, 6 years is not that old for a Thinkpad, but you'll get to see that as times goes by

yeah but it wasn't a thinkpad unfortunately. it was a generic asus shite that I bought at the end of high school for gaymen.

it was 250 euros with 8 gb ram and 240 gb ssd. d-did I do good?

Here it is, excuse the dust. I just got this little fucker and they didn't even bother cleaning it.

Thing is when pushing a bit on the top left corner on the laptop (or lifting the bottom right corner) it wobbles quite a bit, enough to be bothersome.
>>
>>59301751
Nah, what I said was indeed confusing don't worry

Looks like you get to enjoy heat problems as well once you sort out out the stability. The little vent in the dock itself is far too small and basically just blocks the fan - I have no idea what Lenovo was thinking when they were making those docks.
