If you are going for the authentic ThinkPad Experience (tm) go the route of the 420.
If you think the performance gains from Sandy to Ivy are worth the loss of the keyboards then go for the 430.
Either way, expect to put 16GB of RAM if you want to do anything resembling gaming.

For Gaming the most important thing would be to get a model with the NVidia chip on it. With that, the performance of the Intel graphics isn't relevant.

The t430 keyboard is actually pretty decent. Plus, you're going to be using it a lot hooked up to a second monitor with a mechanical keyboard.

The t420 has a notoriously bad screen. Go for the T520

Cough up the extra and get a w520 that's what I'm getting. But youy mostly gonna want to stay with the x20 series. Because the 30 started the new keyboard.

I wouldn't recommend that though. It requires modification to the keyboard connector and a BIOS flash for all functions to work properly. You would risk bricking it and going back to the new keyboard would require another BIOS flash.
