Is there a better, viable alternative to dual-booting Linux on a USB? I know USBs aren't very fast, and I don't want to run a Linux distro slower than its potential. I could use a SSD if I wanted to, but I don't want to lug one around everytime I want to boot into Linux.

Just install Linux on your old machine and use the one with the new GPU for gayming and winbot shit
Be a man and a run Windows 10. What are you afraid of, do you run an illegal trafficking ring via the Suez Canal and you care to be busted. If you aren't a tech illiterate you can easily protect yourself from windows anyway.

I wouldn't be running Windows 10, that was just an example picture. I'm just worried that when I start college I'll be SOL because my classes need Windows software.

SSDs are the size of a phablet. If you own a phablet, you might as well be carrying an SSD.
