How often should you replace a data cable to optomise internet speed from the router?
I'm using an old (maybe 10 years old) 30m Cat5 LAN cable. It runs partly through the roof cavity and outside (exposed to high temps, vermin, etc..).
Should I consider replacing it, or would I be wasting my time and money? Bare in mind, I'm from Australia where we have very low internet speeds anyway.
Also... is there something I can wrap my cable in to protect it from rodents?

If it works and doesn't affect your speeds why bother. Are you getting more than 100Mbps?

Poison

Well I have shit speeds right now <5Mbps, will be upgrading to <30Mbps in a few days (these speeds are normal for Australia).
So you can understand a few Mbps here or there can make a big difference.
But its hard for me to tell if my shit speeds are just shit because the internet is shit generally, or if that's being compounded by a shit cable.

It is your shit internet speeds.
Cables don't really age or something, even when exposed to high temps - UV radiation is a different story but it only affects the mantle. So If you didn't step on it 20 times a day for the last ten years it's as new.
If you have two computers you can test the throughput with iperf3 in order to check if the cable is shit.

Never?

Well yeah I know that, but the cable may not be helping either.

>iperf3
Can you please explain this to a layman? Sounds very useful.

Cables don't lose their speeds over time. Cat5 is rated for 10Mbps-100Mbps, some short cables can do 1Gbps though.

You download a little tool called iperf3, start one instance on each computer. On the first machine you run it in server mode (iperf3 -s), on the other you run it in client mode and connect to the server (iperf3- c 192.168.10.10 or whatever the IP of the server is)

are you fucking autistic since when do cables degrade
>>59241199
unless you're having measurable connectivity problems (fucked up ping times or failing to reach maximum bandwidth) don't bother fucking with it.
