I wanna try FreeBSD. Which tool should I use to run it without actually installing it on Debian? Am I looking for an "emulator" or "virtualisation"?

I downloaded and I'm building it right now. Apparently I had KVM enabled without knowing. From what I understand this means I get near native performance if I use amd64 (host architecture) software, is that correct?
