You're beyond naive if you think Intel removed the pins to benefit the consumer in any way.

The only reason they don't have GOLD pins on the cpus anymore is to cut production costs. Not only have they shifted the cost towards mobo manufacturers, they haven't reduced their CPU prices to reflect this change.
