I was recently given an old bose am5 series one sub, and I want to add it to my current system (2 bookshelves and a center, no sub) but I have no idea how. My other speakers are connected to a receiver with a built in amp that puts out 75 watts per channel, but this sub is rated for 100 watts. I tried connecting the LR inputs to their respective spots in the rear surround connections of the receiver and it put out sound but not nearly enough. What can I do to get it working? Is it even worth it? Sorry if this is the wrong board for this

the receiver also has an rca input specifcally for a sub, which I assume means I need to run the sub through an amp and then into that jack, or just get an active sub.

Yep, better of buying an amplified sub.
Run left and right from your receiver to the sub, then run from the sub to your speakers. That's why the sub has inputs and outputs.
Other subs have an rca input which is what the sub OUT on your receiver is for.
