If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Attention, freedom lovers.

I do not come to this thread often these days but I should let you know something important. It's about the recent security exploits constantly being discovered.

I'm not against Linux. However I do appreciate FOSS more than Linux and *nix. FOSS is the reason why I left the land of windows to Linux. With that said Linux is very convenient and nice.
Problem with Linux and and its SDLC is, Linus is a C purist. I know he is a talented programmer. However C has flaws. It's full of undefined/unspecified behaviors, doesn't prevent data races, has no bounds checking, has no mechanism to prevent dangling pointers and exception handling is practically non-existent. Which is why it is easier to build software with hidden exploits and vulnerabilities in C. Linus is an excellent programmer but he made many mistakes, only because he's a human.

Rust is a fully free and open source modern programming language that addresses this issue very firmly. Rust's built in mechanism like borrow checker, RAII memory management, lifetime etc makes up for almost all of C's safety lackings.

It is harder to write an vulnerable program in Rust unless the developer wants to.

However the fact that Rust improves security is an eye sore to the NSA. I think NSA is making Micros**t and Goo*** to hire anti-shills to campaign against Rust's adoption. Reminder to ignore anti-Rust shills. Anti-Rust shills have a predictable way of defending C:
>You are too retarded for C
Linus made silly mistakes that lead to Linux's TCP/IP vulnerability, OpenSSH has had heartbleed and Grub2's infamous 29 backspace bypass vulnerability was all silly mistakes that everyone makes. Not saying Rust is a panacea to all exploits but it's a major step forward.
>Rust is too hard
While it is true in some sense but Rust is only 2 y/o. As more authors write books on it, it will become easy to learn
>You won't make mistakes in visual studio
This is a nice way of shilling MSVSC aka telemetry compiler.

>>
>>59186856
Another misconception. Currently rust compiler produces binaries as fast as C++.

However Rust is fundamentally faster than C, because it has the latest concurrency model. C compilers' performance has had decades after decades to optimize. Rust is catching up. See

C have the tools for embedded and crossplatform development. Rust don't and i don't care another shitty llvm based compiler that tries to be the new big thing.

Can someone explain to me why I need to modify 4 files (base.xml, base.lst, evdev.lst and evdev.xml) to add a new keyboard layout to X11 using XKB? That seems overkill.

Also I'm not even using evdev anymore, libinput is the only thing I'm running for my input devices afaik -- it seems silly to name it like that.

Honestly it's very early still tier 1 only has i686 and x64 which is guaranteed to work the rest of the tiers are not "supported" or contains possible bugs.
Meanwhile C basically works everywhere.

Why does xgamma exist when xrandr already has a gamma option? Is there any difference?
>>
>>59188611
If your resolution isn't available, you need to create it using cvt, then use xrandr to set it.

Since you seem to be new, just use what your DE ships or use a simliar graphical interface for xrandr.

Some Kindle OS that uses E-paper. Evidently Kindle firmware uses Linux kernels 2.6.26 to 3.0.35

If you had a $5 or $10 or $35 Raspberry Pi, you could use Raspbian or Ubuntu MATE. You could also interface a Pi with an Arduino

If you had the $9 C.H.I.P you could use it's Chip OS which is based on Debian.

right, but the installation ISO comes with both the i686 and the x86_64 install. so it's double the size. Except they're phasing out i686 architecture support, which means you can't get it on their site anymore. So while the current ISO you can download is only 476 MB, that's because it only contains the x86_64 image.

what is piping
>>
>>59211202
In this chapter, we will discuss in detail about pipes and filters in Unix. You can connect two commands together so that the output from one program becomes the input of the next program. Two or more commands connected in this way form a pipe.

To make a pipe, put a vertical bar (|) on the command line between two commands.
When a program takes its input from another program, it performs some operation on that input, and writes the result to the standard output. It is referred to as a filter.
>>
>>59211220
oh, using the pipe symbol, what I've been doing, duh. I'm fucking retarded and it's well past my bedtime.
>>
>>59211202
it's like smoking crack
>>
>>59211202

A pipe is a form of redirection that is used in Linux and other Unix-like operating systems to send the output of one program to another program for further processing.

Redirection is the transferring of standard output to some other destination, such as another program, a file or a printer, instead of the display monitor (which is its default destination). Standard output, sometimes abbreviated stdout, is the destination of the output from command line (i.e., all-text mode) programs in Unix-like operating systems.

Pipes are used to create what can be visualized as a pipeline of commands, which is a temporary direct connection between two or more simple programs. This connection makes possible the performance of some highly specialized task that none of the constituent programs could perform by themselves. A command is merely an instruction provided by a user telling a computer to do something, such as launch a program. The command line programs that do the further processing are referred to as filters.

This direct connection between programs allows them to operate simultaneously and permits data to be transferred between them continuously rather than having to pass it through temporary text files or through the display screen and having to wait for one program to be completed before the next program begins.
>>
>>59211162
You could also use html2text.

unzip -p "$1" \
| strings \
| html2text -style pretty -width $COLUMNS \

I'm looking for my next distribution

I tried zorin when is was first getting into Linux, then I went to Ubuntu. Switched back to Windows shortly after, 2 years later I wanted to pick up Linux again. I tried antegros for a little while and couldn't get used to it. I tried ElementaryOS and couldn't stand how much like MacOS it was. I then tried, and failed at installing Debian, and then tried Fedora. So far I've enjoyed Fedora on my laptop, but I'm looking to kick the windows bug on my desktop and school computer. I was considering Fedora, but there's some things with it that I'm not sure I'll like on a desktop. I'll be using a GPU passthrough for my games if that matters. What distros should I look at?

Are Windows 10 and Linux on the same hard drive? If they're on different drives, Linux can often read a Windows drive anyway. If that's the case, in Linux just find the directories in the Windows area and copy them over. It would also help to copy the .torrent files over. You could also move the files to external storage, then in Linux copy them over (unless you want to seed from external storage).

Add the .torrent in your Linux torrent client, don't pre allocate all files, and don't have it start when you add it. Oftentimes torrent clients have an option like "force recheck" where you can point a .torrent to a directory and it will verify the checksum of all the files. That way you can seed files you already have (or obtained elsewhere).

Now a large chunk of my hd is inaccessible because I have no idea how to fix it. Thats not my question, but just a backstory on how retarded I am.

Now, after not coming to /g/ for a year or more, I want to try linux again, but on a shitty laptop that I will only use for Linux.

Any tips on how I can get used it, so I can start my journey right this time?
Thank you kindly.

Give me a distro that comes preconfigured with Cinnamon, and has long term support release

Manjaro.

Get a *buntu/Mint with whatever DE you like - I like KDE, hence I use KDE Neon which is the ubuntu LTS + constant KDE Plasma updates. I also have cinnamon and xfce installed on the same install so I can use different DEs if I want.

Once you know what you want to install, install it, try and make /home a separate partition in case you don't lose your data if (when) you change distros, learn to install things using the console and synaptic, and so on. Try to do everything in Linux before defaulting to Win otherwise you'll never break free (and what's the point if you don't).

Thank you for the tip, anon.

Hard to say without knowing more about your machine. Try running mandb.

You do realize that this will take up 64GB, right? Doesn't matter how much of the card is in-use by the filesystem, dd doesn't know about filesystems.

I recommend making a tarball instead.

Beyond that, dd should work. What command are you using?

What software do I need to put on my SBC to be able to comfily stream videos without having to scp it?

single board computer?

do you have a file server? if so, you could take advantage of mpv ( and most video player's) streaming capabilities and do webm related
>>
>>59216142

SBC? Don't know what that means.

sshfs would be one easy way to avoid separately moving the file to local storage, it will stream as necessary.

I'm seeing a lot of shit talking about FreeBSD being not a 'real' Linux. May someone enlighten me on this one ?
>>
>>59216469
Well, it's not based on Linux. It's based on UNIX.

BSD doesn't use the Linux kernel
>>
>>59216469
It's not Linux. Had BSD not had the legal troubles BSD would have taken off.
>>
>>59216005
Yeah I don't mind, going to compress it anyway.

i wonder if trashed and unlinked data will be added to the img
>>
>>59216748

And what's the output when you run that? 1MB transferred?

Try adding `conv=fdatasync` onto that.
>>
>>59216825
Yeah just end up with a 1.0M image. I'll try in a couple mins. The pi is datamining some stuff atm.

What FM is that for the file server?
Looks nice.
And what do you recommend for file server?

>>59216334
Single Board Computer, like a raspberry pi.
Using an Odroid tho.

And yeah, I have sshfs installed but I keep forgetting to actually use it. Didn't know it streams as necessary

Interesting how all the systemd supporters have nothing to offer but to stir up personal attacks
