Why do people love the Model M?

Its basically one of those 'half'mechanical keyboards. I dont understand why a membrane keyboard can go for so much money.

There were quite a few different versions of Model M. One of them does indeed have a rubber membrane, this is not the beloved Model M most people refer to. That one uses buckling springs instead.

The bucking springs go to a membrane layer

No?

>The buckling spring switch consists of a spring and two Capacitive layers. When the spring buckles, the hammer moves striking the two capacitive membrane layers together, registering a key press.

The name refers to the fact that the coil spring tensed between the keycap and a pivoting hammer buckles, i.e. kinks or collapses, at a certain point in its downward traverse, providing auditory and tactile feedback to the keyboard operator. Upon buckling, the hammer is pivoted forward by the spring and strikes an electrical contact which registers the key press. In a Model M, the electrical contact is a membrane sheet similar to that of a modern dome switch keyboard.

Retard cant even read.

That's not the membrane that people are referring to when they complain about membrane keyboards. Plebs use "membrane" when what they're referring to is "rubber dome".

Most of the cost is in the plastics, not the switch

the IBM Model M is a spring in a barrel housing, with a hammer at the bottom that when the spring compresses to actuation point depresses the membrane. its technically inferior to the model F in terms of switch design, as that featured a capacative buckling spring switch design, but the model F has a layout thats a good bit different to modern keyboards.

its also worth bearing in mind that the quality of model M keyboads varies, earlier ones were better made, and indistrual variants are the toughest and by far the most expensive variants.
